I have this tall spindly plant that I had to keep staked and propped up because it was so top heavy. Some kind of Dracena I purchased at Home Depot about 10 years ago.
This spring when I was moving houseplants out for the summer, I got sort of ruthless and cut the top off. I put it in water. Then I put the chopped stem outside.
After a few weeks, I started to notice growth on both. Roots forming in the water, and sprouts growing from the stem stump. Yea!

Thanks for the advice, Purple! It's so much fun to see nature doing its thing!

Cool! I'll have to try this trick.
Of course, I'll ask before to make sure I'm planning on doing it to a plant that can handle it.

Beeker, I had good luck doing this with my tri-color Dracenas too.
That plant in my post had a stem that was almost 3 feet, so I chopped quite a bit off the stem and I'm glad I did because the new sprout will be down close to the pot.
Also, I can not count how many Jade plants I have rooted and produced new plants. They are so easy to grow and propagate.

My, very smart friend, once told me that was, the will to live and perpetuate.
