This little house plant is blooming for the very first time. It's 2" brown flower was a real surprise. I don't know the exact variety...basically one that stays small enough and neat enough to have made a long term niche in my house.

Such an unusual flower, is that plant related to the
    Christmas (type) cactus?

Oh, I was going to say "get well soon", but I guess that wasn't the right response.

Well, anyway, what an unusual looking flower. Does it have any fragrance? and is it really brown?

    It looks awesome!

I have to say, when I first read the title for the post, I thought "Oh no! :( A hernia is NO fun. I hope Jewell's OK."

    :p

Got a giggle from Ronni and Carolyn...thanks for your concern :-D

Carolyn, the flower has no fragrance that I could tell and the larger picture of the flower is pretty accurate on my screen.

Barb, do you know what type of Huernia it is? I've never been able to discover the variety/species. Like many great plants it was a gift. I used to have a red dragon flower, Huernia schneideriana. It's flower was small in comparison and the tendrils got heavy and tended to break off.

    Purpleinopp you are correct.
Cuatro-gatos, Christmas cactus are in the Schlumbergera family. Both the Schlumbergera and Huernia are succulents and are propagated the same. I have had many more flowers more often from Christmas cactus :stew1:

Clay and Cherylad, I agree it is an unusual flower. It sure didn't last long though.

Here is mine. I am not sure what mine is nor do I recall if there is a lable in my pot yet. I love them. I have had many different kind over the years. Some flowers look like lifesavers and are much smaller.

Very nice Barb. Such variety within a group of plants that look so similar.

    Amazing flower!

Can anyone tell me if this is a Huernia? I always thought it was an Orbea which look similar.

Joe, you may be much more accurate in IDing this succulent than me. The stapelia, huernia, and orbea look much the same to my uninformed eye. After searching photos it could possibly be a stapelia also. I am certainly a raw amateur and got my original starts in a trade. One more clue: the stapelia blooms stink on many varieties.

I'm no expert either to be honest. I'm sure Stapelias and Orbeas are are more reddish colour like mine though.

I could of course be completely wrong!
