Castor bean grows in your area? I am really surprised (in a good way)! I thought they only did well in my hot and humid environment - Anyway brace yourself now, because if the conditions are right, castor bean trees can easily grow to over 20 feet (and that too within the first year)! I myself was amazed when I planted them in my home way back in the early 90s. However once in the wild I saw a tree that was almost 45 feet high! Which is extremely unusual, as in the wild these trees hardly over grow over 9 to 12 feet... It all depends on how much water and direct sunlight it gets. Your castor bean is the brown/black/red type, so I could be wrong about the size of the mature tree - As over here we only have the lush green type.
Donna S, You must be so proud of your daughter. Treasure each step of the way dear. As usual your plants are beautiful. Love the Caster Beans. I have been thinking of doing them next year just because of you.....
Wow Donna. That went by fast, huh? She is a beautiful young lady. Your castor bean looks very nice. I don't think any of mine have ever gotten that big. Maybe if I gave them more room. I am always hacking off their leaves because they make too much shade for the other plants.
I grew a Castor Bean once... it got around 10 ft tall. But I was always worried that something/someone would munch on it and get sick. Too bad they're so poisonous... because they really are pretty! And now I'm curious to see how big your's will get!
