The Blue Jays are really hungry for peanuts....they like to make a lot of noise when the dish is empty...I added some smaller peanuts and some of the other birds decided to try them out.... Great shots of the Blue Jay sherry. It seems to really enjoy those peanuts. So glad there were enough smaller ones for the other birds too.
Always a pleasure when I see your username attached to a photo topic Sherry as I know a treat lies ahead. Today was no exception! The Blue Jays really are a handsome bird. Thanks Sherry.
Wow, did the chickadee and sparrow really think they could eat a whole peanut? Or did they just stand there longingly staring at them, or trying to calculate how to accomplish the task?
Great photo's as usual. I wish I had the eye and steady hand for taking such good photo's. I like most birds but for some reason the chickadee is a favorite..following the hummingbirds.
Thank you Netty.. Thank you eileen... Thank you Frank...I think the Blue Jays are a beautiful bird too and I love how they call out and can mimic other birds.. Thank you Sjoerd... Beeker...yes, the small birds think they can carry off a peanut, sometimes they do make it if the peanut is small enough. It is fun watching them trying to do it. I do add unshelled peanuts at times just for them.. cherylad...I think the squirrel got scared off by the blue jays. At times the feeder gets hectic when I have 4-5 jays wanting a peanut at the same time...I caught this shot on two of them not wanting to share it... 2ofus...the chickadee is another beautiful bird and they make such a great sound. It makes me smile when I hear them. As for a steady hand, not me at all. You need a camera with an image stabilizer, canon has them. Blue Jays, not willing to share peanuts... They want all of the peanuts for themselves. I have mourning doves here that chase every other bird off of the tray feeder for safflower, even other mourning doves. I guess you have to make sure you have enough food to survive.
I always put peanuts out that are in the shell. The small birds will peck a hole in the end so they can get ahold of it, to carry it off. Surprised to see no Titmouse. They usually hang out with the Chickadee's.
It's a pity those Jays don't realise there's plenty of food for all comers. They could then conserve their energy for eating instead of fighting.
