Like I had said in the above post. Here are some of the beautiful buildings. As the picture says. They are now using this beautiful building for the Historical Society. Not sure what it originally was. Just beautiful stone and brick work. This is the Historical Society building. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) No More praise sang here. Sad. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) But this next Church building is still in use. It is St. Annes and is such a grand building. Amazing arches. I would have loved to gone inside. But we where pressed for time. We will definitely go back and see these building from the inside as well. St. Annes Church building. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Beautiful arches. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) St. Annes church. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) The next building is the old fire station. Another gorgeous building. Fire Station with old bell tower still there. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Beautiful brick work. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Not sure what this building had been. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Here's the date when it was constructed ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Very unusual stone work. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) We saw this type of stone work on quite a few of the building in Calument, Mich. In the next picture you can see that the side of the building has this stone work on it. Maybe the original court house or opera house? What some beautiful brick and stone. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Not sure if these where doors or window at on time. If doors it could have been the local livery stable for horses. It is a shame they bricked them up and added those ugly glass block windows. Not sure what this building was. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Close up of the beautiful brick work. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) After leaving Calumet Michigan we headed for Houghton Michigan which was on our way home. We had to stop and see some of the sights. This mine was really neat. If we would have had more time. Again the time crunch. We would have gone on a 1hour tram ride down into the mine. But pic's are all we took home with us. Plus the wind was still blown like nuts and it was an open tram. Burrrrrr. Just outside of Houghton, Michigan. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Here is some of that neat stone we saw in Calumet, Mich. on so many of the buildings. Now we know where it cam from. This building was where the miners came to have their oil lamp refilled. Oil lamp house. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) This is a view of the Hoist and the Hoist house. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Very neat stone and brick work. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) This is the building where the men would go and be taken down into the mine. Again some really neat brick work. For a mining building I was surprised to see such neat brick and stone. Main mine building. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) There was a lot of old metal pieces laying around that they much have used on some of the equipment in the mine. What a great view from the mines property. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Our only stop going threw Houghton. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) This was the only stop we made while going threw Houghton, Michigan. We saw it from a distinct and had to see it up close. What a grand building. The brick work is so awesome. County Court House in Houghton, Mich. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) This next photo was taken from the street this beautiful building sat. We were head out to go home and I just had to get one more photo. That is the Portage river that you see in the pic. Well that wraps up our short trip to the U.P. of Michigan. So glad we went and thanks for coming along with us.
What utterly beautiful buildings. The architecture is so much easier on the eye than the glass and concrete buildings you see nowadays. Thanks for sharing your trip with us and showing us such wonderful constructions. :-D
Those buildings are beautiful, love those stones they used. The architecture is well thought off, only minimal painting on the walls. Beautiful.
I love the buildings. They are so distinctive and I have not seen ones like that before. Thanks for sharing your vacation.
That court house building is particularly beautiful and distinctive Tooty. Makes buildings of today look dull and unadventurous in comparison. Could this be the start of a "beautiful buildings" thread on the Stew? I hope so!
Henry--so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you. Eileen-- KK NG---2ofus--- that is so true. The buildings now a days have very little character. Frank I also was captivated by the beauty of the buildings brick work. Yes the building of today can not hold a candle to those built in that era. Yes!!!! I think that a "Beautiful Buildings" thread would be a great idea.
Wonderful pic's Tooty. I love old buildings and the history behind them. If only those walls could talk.
Donna Thank you. I also love older buildings and the history that goes with them. Funny how we here in the U.S think that buildings that are 200 or more years old are old. But in Europe they have building that are Centuries old. Now those are old and come with quite the fascinating history.
