For Christmas my son and daughter In-love gave me this for Christmas----I know it looks very cute. But Racoon Bird feeder ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) I could not believe my eyes when they came carrying it into the house. Not sure if they know how much I dislike these little critters. Dislike is a mild word in how I feel about them. Oh well,I know I sound like Scrooge. I didn't say anything except--isn' that cute. They told me that the person that makes these feeders also makes ones that look like birds & deer. OH BOY I thought. A deer would have been so neat. We'll I now have a raccoon hung up my it's neck peering at me every time I look out our front window. I'm hoping it will deter any other real raccoons from raiding my feeders come spring and summer. Thinking that this is what will happen to them. It does make a great suet feeder for the woodpeckers.
I think it is rather cute and your birds don't seem to mind it being a racoon. Maybe looking out on it each day will dilute your dislike for the real thing - at least until the weather improves.
Well, if worse comes to worse, you can always use it for target practice. Throwing rotten tomatoes, old apples, even rocks could relieve a lot of frustration.
I think it's very cute Tooty. If it's still difficult to put up with may I suggest that if you squint really, really hard you can imagine it to be an owl
Eileen--Not sure about the dilute factor. But I do notice how cute it does look. Marling---oh now that does sound like some good frustration therapy. But it reminds of a friend who is not really a close friend anymore. Many years ago I did a sketch of a Tiger head for a girlfriend. It was done in colored pencil and looked really neat. I think I remember her saying one time how she liked them. To make a long story shorter. One day several years later I was over visiting and noticed she had put up a target in her backyard to practice shoot. I could not believe my eyes. There hung my beautiful Tiger picture shot full of holes. :'( Last time I gave her any gift. Chery it better not be a welcome sign for those little 4 legged buggers. Only time will tell. Frank- I'm squinting. Nope I just keep seeing that crummy little varmint. I am thinking of painting it to look like a skunk or a red panda. Oh, I think the red panda would look really cute. But the tail is a bit short.
I think it is cute but then I've never had a raccoon visit my yard before. I think, with the shape of the face and the tail, I'd make it into a red fox. Maybe that would scare the raccoons away. :-D
I'm not a fan of raccoons either, but that is a beautiful feeder! Looks like the birds enjoy it too, and that's what counts
I don't have raccoons at my feeders but they once loved in my little back building. I don't care for them either.
I think I remember seeing the photo of the mess they made of your pots, etc. in that back building. No wonder you aren't a big fan of the little bandits! We don't have raccoons most of the time. Our coyotes take care of them, but we did have one who took the rope off the top of the galvanized can we keep birdseed in and spread birdseed all over the shed. We had more raccoons when we lived in town than we have seen here.
2ofus-that would be a good idea also. I love fox. Netty---Barb---Marlin--Yes they are not welcome in my yard also. Last year we killed three of them that where bigger than our sweet little 12 poodle mix. She has no fear and would have gone after them. I do not want them killing my sweet little Tooties dog.
Everyone near here who has a small dog knows to accompany it on its evening rounds. Coyotes don't discriminate against Chihuahuas, Yorkies, etc. They're all delicious.
Marlin--I never leave my little dog by herself. I always check in the yard before opening up the door so now critters are out there. Once she took off after a Possum So glad it decided to play dead as she ran around it barking her little head off with me in hot pursuit.
Years ago when we had a woods in our backyard we used to have them....the story starts out with missing feeders? I asked my husband if he had moved the feeders and he said no... We spent about an hour walking through our part of the woods looking for them in case the wind had gotten them....then a sleepless night hit and I was looking out the window on the deck and sure enough 3 small young raccoons....we did a little reading on them and people said to take the feeders down (of the ones that were left behind)....so every night we started taking them down and sure enough after a week of doing this we left them out again and no sign of them. I would recommend that anyone has problems with them to do the same or find a way to hang the feeders where they can't get them down or destroy them... Your gift is very cute but my children know I am a bird lover so I am hoping they would pick a cardinal or bluejay or even a frog...
