I don't know where they came from and how did they enter our house but they are eating the sides of the door. If this continues, the sides of the door will eventually break. I tried spraying them with pesticides but they came back after a while. Now there is more on the small holes on the ceiling.
We tried cinnamon too last year and had great success (with black ants), but these don't sound like ants to me.
Get some cheap jelly and a bottle of Boric Acid. You can find Boric Acid in the pharmacy and laundry aisles at most stores. Mix the Boric Acid in with the jelly (1 teaspoon of boric acid with 1 cup of jelly) and put it several places where the ants can find it. I usually put a blob on a piece of foil so it's easy to clean up later. Keep the extra in the fridge and change the baits every few days until the ants are gone. They'll take the mix back to the nest and pass it from ant to ant. It's a slow poison and will kill the entire nest. The mixture is about a 2% solution and is perfectly safe for pets and children. If you have outdoor ants, you can mix a much stronger solution (up to 50/50), but the effects will still be limited. It's best use is for small red or black indoor ants.
Could be Carpenter Ants, the many species come in all different sizes and colors and eat wood. They range in length from 13/100 of an inch to half an inch. Colors they come in are black, red, brown, yellow or orange and a combination of red/black. The Boric Acid/jelly combo will work on them or sprinkle Boric Acid powder along base boards and on any mound outside that you might find.
