I mulch my perennial bed each year and have noticed that the plants don't seem to propegate as quickly as I'd like! I have had the garden for approximately 4 years. Does mulching cut down on the propegation process? I have thought to remove some of the mulch this fall around the plants I would like to produce more of . . .any other thoughts? Thanks! [/code]
I am rather a novice, but mulching helps cut down on weeds, so I am sure it holds back the good stuff in a way also. But, if you are in Maine, I wouldn't go with less mulch, or you may not have anything next year! I have one bed in particular that it's hard to get to the real 'dirt' it is mulched so deeply ... not that much of a problem, I add a little good topsoil any time I am planting something new along with some peat and a little manure and the plants don't care that much what they are deep in as far as I can see!
