That wonderful weed made some beautiful squash, Cajun. And don't forget the blossoms. Squash blossoms are tasty in soups, salads, stews, sauteed, all kinds of dishes. It is always a happy event when i find fresh squash blossoms in the market, yum!
I wouldn't mind an invasion of that kind. The 'weeds' that I get don't produce anything useful at all.
Thanks yall we love butternut squashes, thats how the seeds wind up in the compost pile. I heard about eating the blossums and as you can see from the post we had lots of great big ones but I always figured I shouldnt do it and let them be squash and grow up. It occurs to me that I could pick the male flowers though....vitrsna what would be your favorite squashy flower thing I could do with say 6 or 8 big flowers???? i may just give it a try.
Well, let me see Cajun, i'll put them in just about anything except oatmeal. Specifically, i like them in a steamed or light stir fry with a mix of other vegetables, like summer squash, tomatoes, onion, garlic, maybe some peppers (hot and or sweet), maybe some basil, flat peas ...whatever you like best. They might be nice chopped and scattered on top of any type of gumbo, red beans and rice, etc. I don't use "recipes" when i cook or i'd give you one. You do have this shimp boil thing where you throw all these things in a big pot (shrimp, potatoes, corn, chili peppers...in the appropriate order of course...like potatoes first, then corn...) then toss all the goodies on a table covered with newspapers? The squash blossoms would be a nice addition to the caldo.
since I posted earlier I have been doing some searching and found lots of very good looking mexican dishes as well we will definately give them a try possably even today but this weekend for sure I'll let ya know. Based on the sucess we may actually plant them on purpose next year.
I'll look forward to hearing how your squash blossom experiment goes! Hibiscus flowers are also used in some dishes and is popular as a tea (cold or hot) often referred to as jamaica. I've prepared sauteed prawns with jamaica for guests and it was a big hit! Lucky for a no recipe renegade cook like me. Also, steamed squash blossoms and chard make a nice combination with mushrooms in tacos and such. I was born and grew up in the US, and i didn't grow up learning mexican recipes so i'm no expert
This is actually the second time they volunteered. last time they vined over our grape arbor and hung there looking kinda cool in our jungle.
Just look at how robust and healthy that squash and vine are! I say if some little seed wants to volunteer itself to grow in a certain place...let it grow if at all possible and it will show an abundance of gratitude. Butternut squash is soooo gooood.
I currently have 2 of those squash split with butter and Cajun spice keeping a flat chicken company out on the pit. Life is grand at the moment the blues are playing the pits a smoking away and soon as it cools some we gonna be dancing on the patio. Aint that why we work in our yards to enjoy it??
