All but 3 new ones are in bloom now. They are my favorite, but then, whatever is in bloom is my favorite at that time! Niobe Princess of Albany Princess of Albany. The trellis is 12 feet tall Multi Blue Unknown..sold to me as a Niobe.
Oh my gosh, those are gorgeous! I love Clematis, but they don't seem to like me much lately. I had lovely ones at the old house but can't seem to get one to live long here. The first one is stunning ... I haven't seen one that dark.
Thank you. Most of my clematis is pink or light purple. So I added the red Niobe . I actually like the small flowered clematis a little better than large ones. Most of the small flowered clematis I have are exuberant growers that will grow 12 feet or more and are so thick and have so many blossoms. The Princess of Albany blooms most of the summer also. This spring I ordered 2 non-climbing clematis that trail through the flowerbeds and supposedly ramble up perennials and shrubs. I'll have to wait and see how they do.
Wow! I am impressed. This is my first year trying to grow them and so far, not-so-good. But, we have had a hot, bizarre summer I love that red and the small flowers, actually I like them all! Great job!
I really don't do anything special to them so it must be our clay soil or the weather. I sometimes wish they didn't grow quite so exuberant as in the spring it's almost a daily job to keep them trained to climb up the trellis instead of creeping all over everything else. (I hope that comment doesn't jinx me!) There's actually a Jackamanii clematis planted with the large pink one but it's being smothered so next spring I need to move it. I have to divide some iris this summer so maybe I can find a different place for them and see if Mike will build me another trellis and I can plant it in their spot. He has built all the trellis's but one and he had to widen so it would span the gate.
The Jackamani clematis finally started to bloom and it is so pretty with the pink one I hate to move it.

Oh my word, 2 OF! Smashing Clematis foto's. Real beauties. I am quite fond of them and never saw one I didn't like. Yours look so good.
Beautiful... ...mine are thin and sparse so I was thinking of getting rid of them ...location is the key I think. I used to have the perfect spot for mine until we put in some cement work and a tree that now shades the area. Do you have any tips for growing them as beautiful as yours? I love the two colors together...
All of your nice comments are making me feel guilty as I do so little for the abundant blooms. The only thing I do is plant them in full sun, toss a little chicken manure fertilizer on them once a year (not a lot as I was told they will not bloom as well) and keep plenty of mulch or plantings around the bases to keep the roots cool. I really do think that they mainly just like the weather (warm, not hot, days and cool nights) or the alkali clay soil I've got.
Those are wonderful. Have you ever had problems with caterpillars? The Gulf Fritillary (spelling?) caterpillars will eat ours down to nothing.
