Shocked this morning to hear of David Bowie's passing. He has been my favourite music artist for over two decades ever since my brother brought back a music cassette from college featuring a collection of his songs. Before that time I always thought "that guy looks so strange / scary" when I saw him in magazines and the movie 'Labyrinth' (which he was great in). I put on the cassette and I wasn't really feeling it until it got to the track 'Let's Dance'. I suddenly began to understand that his style was so varied that I shouldn't try to categorise him in my head. He introduced me to a lot of flavours of music from soul to jazz, electronic to rock and everything in between. My brother and I went to see him in concert in 1997 in the Olympia Theatre, Dublin. Here was the setlist http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/david-bowie/1997/olympia-theatre-dublin-ireland-73d0eac9.html I haven't been to many concerts in my life but this was truly amazing. Thanks for the music David. RIP
Lyrics from David Bowie's song "LAZARUS": I'm looking up through tears, David - raising my cup and wishing Godspeed to the man who fell to Earth.
I thought I would share some of his lesser known tracks which don't get any air time but are completely excellent! Strangers When We Meet Black Tie, White Noise Be My Wife
Reading some of the news reports yesterday, it seems David Bowie was busy working on a new album, even through his illness. I didn't even realize he had released a new album a few days before his death! An entertainer right to the very end ... in true Bowie style. The world has lost an amazing artist.
Lazarus was absolutely beautiful (and as always strange) to watch. His farewell to the world. He's always been one of my favorite musicians and I haven't been this affected by a musicians death in a long time. We've truly lost a legend. He went with such grace, he seemed ready and welcoming for his time to go. Another from "Lazarus". "Like a bluebird I'll be free". He was such a brilliant musician in and person in life, and even when he died he did so in an inspiring way. And to quote a friend "Only David Bowie could release another beautiful critically acclaimed album right before his death and after struggling 18 months of cancer".
