Something was eating our small onion plants and, at first we thought 'cut worm'. Mike even went out at all hours of the night trying to catch it but never saw anything. Then I thought 'birds'. We covered the onions with netting and then finally discovered what it was. She loves raw onions! She was even eating any tips that stuck out of the mesh.
Oh boy, when she pants I bet you nearly keel over! Our Golden Retriever got into the cat's Christmas treat of mackerel, and we nearly died of "breath poisoning!"
Oh dear I think that's a habit she'll have to grow out of 2ofus as onions are poisonous to dogs. Onions, garlic and chives contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic dogs as well as cats. They cause a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells circulating through your pet's body to burst. Thankfully she doesn't appear to have ingested too much at a time. Let's hope she finds something else she prefers.
Lol,..i wasn't expecting it to be that culprit,..thanks for the heads up on onions and stuff Eileen,..i didn't know that and my dog will eat anything so i must be alert in future
One of my dogs steals cucumbers off the vine as well as squash. Yesterday she drug a 14 inch, over grown zucchini into the yard.
As soon as I read your post, Eileen, we fenced the onions. Luckily she is short so we can reach over the fence to weed or pull onions. I'll have to watch and make sure the onion leaves don't grow through. It's starting to get hard to work in the garden with the enviromesh tunnels for broccoli and chard and now the onions!
One less thing you have to worry about now 2ofus and well worth the effort. I'd hate to read that you, or someone else, had to rush their pet to the vets because of onion poisoning.
2ofus, your doggie reminds me of the year my youngest grandson decided he wanted to be a "Farmist". My daughter and I dug up a section for him. He began setting out onion seedlings. To his surprise, his Chihuahua was going along behind him, taking out each seedling and eating it.
We heard our little 'onion eater' barking constantly outside so Mike went out to check on her and found she had jumped the fence, which is three feet taller than she is, and was in the onions. She just couldn't figure out how to get back out! This time she got her rear end paddled and tomorrow we get the make the fence tall enough to keep her out!
2ofus,..she really must have developed a taste for onions to get over that present fence,..seeing onions are harmful to dogs a rear end being paddled,..could be a life saver in the end
Growingpains,..neither did i,..luckily Eileen posted earlier in this Thread giving us the info,..its just above in this Thread,..worth taking note of
Never knew onions were harmful to dogs nor would I have ever guessed your onion culprit was the pet pooch!
She is the worst pet we've ever had for eating anything she finds and I have no idea how to stop her!
