I didn't know that kingfishers killed the fish until I took this picture. It just kept hitting the fish on the log, banging it from side to side.
I have seen them giving their catch a whack Kildane but never got a picture. One bird that I hope one day to get a good picture of. Great capture on your part.
@Kildale - Never knew they killed it. I actually thought they caught the fish (or whatever) and ate it while it was still alive. Never realized they actually killed it. Quite like Kingfishers too.
When I said I hoped to get a picture of a kingfisher, it was our colourful little bird that I was thinking of. This picture is of an Egyptian kingfisher with its dead catch in Luxor in 2011. It had just whacked it on the lighting bracket And this is a kingfisher in Sri Lanka about 20 years ago. He is sitting on a fish trap, he's no fool
I knew they killed their fish before eating but have never seen it done in real life. They are such hard birds to photograph here that I don't have any good photographs of them. Well done Kildale and Taddang for catching them with your cameras.
Those are amazing photos! We have belted kingfishers at our pond, and enjoy watching them sit in the willows until they spot their prey, then dash and dive to get a fish. This is a terrible photo, but the best we could do. The kingfisher is setting on a post that is the remainder of a small fishing dock. Guess it still is a fishing dock!
I go to a local spot, but it is the sea, and with the low tides the kingfisher is further away. These were a couple of shots of one when the tide was a little higher.
Great pictures Kildale,..Raddang,..and Marlingardener,..i have never managed to capture an image of a Kingfisher despite seeing them very often,..flashing past,..the Kingfisher i am used to seeing is the one in the video below. Kingfisher.
Lovely birds all. First property we had a fields width away was a small river- it led further along into a bigger one. We fished both and there was just a few Kingfishers along them. A couple of times having settled down quietly with rod extending part out over water one settled just for a few seconds on it so got a good close up look- beautiful colours.
Great photos all! Love 'em. Like your photo from Sri Lanka Raddang......NICE! I'm not sure if this guy is a Kingfisher or not but he or she has the "look" of one and was definitely hunting.
@Kildale - seeing your photo I'll concur with Heron. The one I took the photo of was on the hunt. He was totally focused and intent on getting a fish and he did!
This Kingfisher perches on a wire overlooking the tide as it comes in. Then it got a bit of a shock when this crow knocked him off.
My all time favorite bird. Ours are the most beautiful blue. wow, clever! I bought the image off a photographer. My next favorite is the Hummers, I have red plants to live in hope a Huimmer will fly in..... K
