The harvest time is underway at the moment here. We are harvesting three bean sorts, Swiss chard, Opal plums, sweetcorn, courgettes by the dozen, toms of two sorts and cucumbers. It is keeping us hopping. Today it was rainy with high winds. When we went out to the lottie to collect veggies from other allotmenteers to add to our donation and take to the Food Bank. A harvesting milestone was reached for us-- sweetcorn (maïs). A few weeks ago I noticed that one of the ears had been chewed-on--the work of mice. I set some traps and was able to catch a couple. Since then, there have been no more mouse-attacks on the corn ears, thank goodness. I took those rodents far, far away. Yesterday, I snapped-off eight cobs and cob-ettes. The cob-ettes were about half the length of the normal ones and were the second cobs on a stalk. Shorter, but just as delicious. Here are four fine specimens: Ah yes, but look at this beauty— Melted butter and a sprinkle of salt. Yummers! After the meal, the very last of the Opal plums were for desert. I skinned them all, as the bride likes her plums without skins. No problem. Today the milestone supper is going to be something that we are crazy about.....here’s a hint: Well, it will be a no-brainer for most folks—a BLT. Step one—bread, butter and mayo with pepper: Then with pomodori’s added: Then with bacon and lettuce added--the final product: Some folks like theirs on toasted bread: I like garden milestones, and the milestones are coming on quickly now. The thing that I like about the milestones is that at the end of the day, eating is going to play a roll. I hope you are having gardening milestones of your own. Bon appétit.
Looks delicious Sjoerd! I bought some bacon yesterday because my garden tomatoes are ready. I plant on making a sandwich that looks a lot like yours
That sweetcorn with the butter melting over it looks so good!! I can almost feel the butter dripping off my chin.
Love corn on the cob. Could polish off a few ears right now seeing your photo! And am sure I could go for a BLT too
Hee, hee, hee---You know hat is tasty, don't you NETTY. Why don't you post a piccy of your BLT's? EILEEN--The foto had a good effect on you then, eh? We polished-off another five cobs tonight for supper. I am beginning to think that we will not have any sweetcorn to freeze-in at this rate. Thanks CAROLYN-- They were, they were. Ta ISLANDLIFE--I'll bet you would have no problem at all.
Yum, the corn and toasted BLT looks great. It may be store bought but I can do that same thing tomorrow...I am sure it won't taste as good as yours but I am sure I will enjoy it....
Oh I dunno WARE-- I´ll bet that you will have no complaint at all. Why not post a pic on here of your BLT and sweetcorn.
SJ it all looks so yummy. We had bi-colored sweet corn from a local grower a few days ago. It was some of the sweetest corn we have had in quite a few years. Yummy! Then 2 days ago we had BLT's with some of our garden tomatoes. Again--YUMMY! I love this time of year will all the delicious fruits and veggies becoming edible. I think today or tomorrow we will be picking the first of our early apples. Then we will have some very yummy Apple Crisp, apple sauce, apple pie, ect. Excuse my drool marks on the post.
Oh dear 2T--That really does sound good to me. Your drooling is excused...but mine is also causing problems...before you know it, we are going to create a river here....ummmm, lemmie see---a name for this river now? Hmmmmm.
Well, you've helped me make up my mind for dinner tonight! BLT sandwich, but as our corn is long gone, I think we'll have fried zucchini with ours. I only have 2 zucchini left, one for frying and one for zucchini bread tomorrow. YUM!
