Mutt peeps. The hen who hatched them is a golden Buff (which rarely is broody) and the eggs? good lord only knows. The roosters are mutts from last years chick hatch or maybe the year before... and the eggs could be from 7 different hens. there were actually 15 or more eggs in the clutch of eggs. Several of the eggs didn't hatch and two failed to completely hatch and eventually died. but they are indeed cute.
Ahhhhh, how utterly adorable! It seems we are stuck with a rooster, so our hens may be raising babies next spring. I'll be asking advice from you Carolyn, and from Barb. Sometimes mutts, both in dogs and poultry, are the smartest, hardiest, and most inventive.
Carolyn,..very cute,..its always fun and interesting to watch them at this age then see what they turn out to be when they mature,..hoping you have more ladies in the batch than males.
Isn't that the truth...but it seems more are roos than hens. grrr! Jane, they can take care of them themselves... I rarely interfere. today was an exception. I got home from church and walked around the house into the backdoor instead of the basement door (I drive the inlaws now. They no longer have the keys. sigh. ) to hear very loud peppeing. one was stuck in the window well and as I went to step in to get it out I stepped onto a yellowjacket nest in there... oops. That hurt. luckily all I got was a sting on a finger, but it hurts. I was surprised I had on a dress and none went onto my legs to sting me.
OUCH! Yellow jackets are definitely NOT nice. Hope the hurt goes away real soon. (Wish I knew a home remedy to fix it)
Good now. I wrapped it in plantain leaf and rubberbanded it on for a while. I can't even tell where the sting was at now.
Your baby chicks are so cute. I raised chickens years ago and, not only enjoyed the eggs, I enjoyed the chickens too. I'm glad you saved the chick but am sorry you were stung.
Here they are again. Not in the chickencoop, either. sigh. right on the deck railing outside the kitchen window.( where KK can see some of his tomato seeds.)
