You cater for their every need and, in return, they give you their trust. An ideal partnership between you and your birds.
I do not see how you get them that tame. I can walk out the door and most here are gone even if I am about to feed them.
I'm with you Mart - I'm more than envious that Kildale is able to hand feed I just don't get the 'how'! Most of the birds around here split the second I go outside. I'd have to camp out there for months 'til they calmed enough to let me get close to them. The hummers will chirp and squawk at me and they'll come to feed if I stand really still but I need to be, at least, 6' away from the feeders. Lovely photos though
I have my mockingbird pair that is not too spooky.. But still can`t get too close even though they know I have saved some of the young ones from the dogs. They do not dive bomb me as they do others when I am close to the nests but thats as good as it gets.
Even although I feed the birds every day they won't allow me too close to them. In winter they tolerate me in the garden more so than in summer. Only the robins and blackbirds will stay close by hoping to be first to get to the selection of food.
It IS cold outside here. Minus 9 tonight (which is cold for here). Our Ana's hummingbirds don't fare overly well in these low low temperatures so I do make sure to bring in and take out the feeders for them.
