Quite different from the male.

    They are quite different, Kildale! I've never seen one before, so thanks for posting. The males have popped up in large numbers just in the past week or so here and we get after them because they always manage to swoop into the feeders and give the finches, chickadees and sparrows such a fright!

    The female looks so different that you'd hardly believe they were the same species as the males.

    That wing colour really stands out making him look like some type of tropical bird. I don't think he'll have a problem attracting the ladies do you?

    You can sometimes get a really good flash of red off a male. Have them in the marsh out back. Interesting birds ;)

    Great pic's. We have a few of them showing up at our sunflower feeder this time of year.
