I'm impressed by each of you, with all your garden escapades . I seem to putter about, a little here. a little there. Today was 32 Blue Lake beans put in the earth. I think 15 or 16 beet slips, (I say slips because they're such tiny things) 4 pickling cucumber plants . Pulled Bindweed away from the Blackberry plants and Horseradish. Hilled the two rows of spuds.
A simple walk-about becomes an episode of weed pulling.

The Purple Cherokee tomato plant has 3 lovely blossoms.
I have Okra seeds in a tiny bit of water in a small jar hoping they sprout.

The Okra seed appeared to be growing slimy. I poured the water off, rinsed and planted the seed. :fingerscrossed:
Today I set out 4 Supice tomato plants, 23 Blue Lake bean plants, about a dozen beet seedllings, a few Begonia plants.

A yellow Rose, which I moved from a vacant lot to our roadside flower garden, has several beautiful of the sweetest smelling Roses ever. I am so happy, I cut off two buds and took them to the Manager's wife (She has cancer) as a thank you because the Manager allowed me to take the Rose from the vacant lot.

Growingpains, you not only saved a rose, but you shared it--this is what gardening is all about!
Not much in the gardens today except a bit of weeding. We mowed the back yard and bagged the grass clippings, then tossed them in the outside hen coop. Happy chickens!
Tomorrow is picking, washing, and sorting veggies to take to the food pantry. I sure hope those nice folks get enthused over squash!

Not nearly as productive as you and your Bride, Sjoerd.

Marling, we use our grass clippings as a mulch in one, special flower garden. The colors are shades of pink, lavender, and currently a bit of white. The grass seems to set it off well and creates feed as it decays.

As usual with Peonies, just when they're at the most awesome, rain pours down and ends the display.

Its been an eventful few weeks. I'm happy to say most things in the garden now are just things that need to be left to grow, just watch, weed and wait. I finished harvesting lettuce until the fall. That was a fun experience. Beans and cukes are on their climb. We did trim the roses(a few weeks late) and clean up all of the flower beds besides 1 large and a small. Next comes the fence the mulch.

Just got in from pulling carrots and picking squash. Thank heavens for friends who don't have vegetable gardens!
Now I'm out to weed the front flower bed and deadhead roses. The wind is down so I won't have to chase the rose canes!

Carolyn, let us know how the farm tour went, please!
Kate, I hop you are feeling better soon.
Went into town this morning to distribute squash, onions, eggs, and homemade cheese rolls. This afternoon I'm going to clean the onions that are ready to go into storage, and pick a squash or two. The hens are laying pretty well, so I'll gather some eggs. I think of our hens as our "feathered garden"!

    Kate.. feel better soon!

well, it is done. they had a translator with them and we went through the high tunnel, the grapes, the strawberries and they went to plant corn across the road with Kevin and Adrian. then I fed them lunch. it was interesting. I wish the communication was a bit better, but it is what it is. I am sure they missed A LOT. we talked about the difference between... indeterminates and determinates.... caged tomatoes and trellised tomatoes..... silver plastic and black plastic... many things. I showed them my rotovator... a hand cultivator for the high tunnel, drip tape etc...my apron that Mart made that holds 4 dz ears of corn..... but there are so many things that don't get asked or said because there are too many thoughts and translations to get through and not enough time.....

Carolyn, what you communicated was more than anyone could have asked! Everything doesn't have to be learned or heard in a day, and I'm sure you gave them food for thought (as well as lunch). You did so much to help them understand and Kevin and Adrian lent a hand, too!
    Congratulations on building bridges.

    KBSRT, don't forget the watering ! :)

Kate, I hope you're feeling much better.

We buy Compari tomatoes which are the only Store-bought tomatoes that taste really good, about golf ball size. We saved seed, sprouted some and the tiny things are barely above the soil in little pots. I so hope to grow at least two plants.

Hey Kate--I hope that you are feeling better now. Chest congestion can drag you down.
Harvested more strawbs and ate spinach harvested the a couple of days ago. I froze-in the rest on the day they were harvested.
Did some weeding and annual removals.
We planted the rest of the toms in the greenhouse along with some hot peppers and marigolds.
Treated the broad beans for "black-fly" (black aphids).
