She was found wandering on a rural farm road, pregnant and hungry, and ended up in a nearby high kill shelter. My soft hearted daughter just couldn't stand it, and made a deal with a friend's rescue to bail her out even though the rescue had no one who could take her in right then. So Paige stepped up and offered to keep her till she had her puppies, by which time space would be available with one of the rescue's regular fosters.

She was very fearful to start out, growled at everyone and everything, wouldn't let anyone touch her, was just terrified. She seemed particularly hateful towards males, though just big males...she wasn't as bad with sweet little River, who just wanted to love on her. Didn't take her long though to figure out that she'd landed in the equivalent of Dog Paradise....Soft bed, excellent food, stellar care (Paige is a retired, experienced Vet Tech) and an entire family who just wanted to love on her and give her treats and attention. When presented with a little kindness she has turned into the sweetest and most loving little lady ever, just wants to be in a lap, any lap though she's bonded pretty closely with Paige. Her entire back end wags she's so happy right now! Paige thinks she's about a week away from delivery.

    Meet Mama Dog.

Paige you are a wonderful person to give a home to a dog that really deserves all the love and attention you can give. I hope the birth goes well and that the mama dog and her puppies all find forever homes.

I couldn`t give that one up ! We have a lab, a german shepherd, scottish deerhound (as far as we can tell) a shepherd cross and a part pit (other part unknown) some found as puppies in the middle of no where. some found starved and literally skin and bones, and the german shepherd ( registered and microchipped)
was about to be shot since he was wandering in the country and the person didn`t want him.
So he brings them all home ! These are just a few we have rescued over the years.

You sure it is going to be that long... maybe today or tomorrow?
Nice story Mart. We seemed to be the dumping ground for all unwanted animals as I was growing up. We had them all....everything from collies to dobies to boxers and beagles and a slew of cats. smh!

I'm so glad that you were able to take the poor dog into your home and give it so much love. She looks so happy. The best dog we ever had arrived just like yours. Scared, alone, hungry, and VERY pregnant! We had her for 17 years.

OK Paige has been monitoring Mama Dog's temperature every day, along with looking for and at various other signs that she was in pre-labor/imminent delivery stage.

Looks like we have a go! Her temp is down to 97/98, trembling and won't go outside. Think we'll have puppies today!!!

:smt026:smt026:smt026 Fingers crossed it's an easy whelping and that the mother and pups all come out of it fit and healthy. I can hardly wait to hear how everything is going.

Her nickname is Boobs McGee! I'm sure you can see why ;) Given all the signs, puppies are imminent within 24 hours. As Paige says, wouldn't it be nice if humans had an awesome early warning sign like that?? Jeez. Stay tuned for #Puppy Watch!

Well, Page got tired of running up and down the stairs to her basement every 20 minutes to see what was going on with Mama Dog/Boobs McGee.

Because she is so resourceful, and also it helps I think that she's a millennial, she set up a WebCam of sorts, jury rigging an old baby monitor to do the job! And so the #puppywatch begins in earnest!

Paige is going overboard to make sure Mama Dog is taken care of. She spent most of the day yesterday in the little baby pool, (that's the dog, not Paige ;) ) well padded with comfy blankets and soft things, for whelping the puppies in. She doesn't want to eat. When convinced to go outside, just for a few minutes, she was found digging a hole under the deck steps. No mama dog, you may be temporarily nesting crazy, but you're not having your puppies in the dirt.

Back inside, belly rubs, heating pad, and we wait. Early labor can't be rushed.
