As the title states, my lovely mother got me my first plant. I'm thrilled to have it, but I'm having trouble taking care of it. First, I need to identify it. So please, does anyone know what type of plant this is?

    Thanks,
    Guillermo

Looks like Dracaena (corn plant). Don`t over water it and filtered light. Mist the leaves weekly !!

Wow! Thank you everyone for this incredibly helpful info. You'll be glad to know that the plant is flourishing! She is given filtered light, and misted weekly. Here's a picture to update you:

Matt, Drecaena (corn plant) isn't rare. Most florists, nurseries, and even big box stores have it. Just make sure the tag says drecanena, and buy the smallest plant you can find, since they grow rather rapidly!
