And the Cajun Navy has arrived! A group of people from Louisiana drove 200 miles towing their boats to help with water rescues. As one lovely Louisianan gentleman said, "Y'all helped us, and we will help you."
I saw one of the Cajun Navy members on the news tonight...the one you quoted. I had forgotten about them.
I had terrible dreams last night about being in water.... obviously I am sure all these people just wish it was in their dreams. this is just terrible. I guess we will probably go to TX in Oct and haul along everything in the garden and then some to do a couple weeks worth of relief work instead of a vacation which we had been planning but no specific destination in mind yet.... just to go. so, now it will be there instead. I will keep the garden growing as much as possible until then.
Carolyn, it's early to tell what will be needed in October. Something will, I'm sure. Before you scrap your vacation plans, wait and see how things develop.
Marling that is a good suggestion. I know many of us would love to rush down there and help. Some of us can do just that through the Red Cross, or Salvation Army by becoming a volunteer. But they also need for us to dig deep in our pockets and help out with financial support and to continue to pray for safety for all those affected. We also need to be on guard for scam artists that are going to try and take advantage of this horrible unfolding tragedy. We heard on the news that there are people going around in boats looking like they are going to save people from their flooded homes. Only to rob them. I pray that they all will be caught and stopped or fall in the water and be eaten my an alligator. Makes me hopping MAD that people would even think of doing such things.
Be careful which charity you give money to. We are getting alerts that there are scammers out there posing as charities. I'm still glued to the radar and satellite, watching the storm. Prayers and best wishes to those out there! Be safe!
There are more evacuations since dams at lakes are being breached and neighborhoods downstream are being flooded. The need will grow, and will continue for quite a while. Right now there are several semi trucks filled with supplies that can't get to shelters due to flooding. There are 1000 (yes, one thousand) volunteers sorting clothing and trying to make some sense of all the materials that is coming in. If you want to help, wait a month. The need will still be there, but the sense of urgency won't be. It's too early to tell what will be needed where--your compassion is appreciated, but will be doubly appreciated after all the news coverage dies down.
I know this one is legit, it's our local CBS station. The shelters are being overrun with people and supplies are running low so cash is always a good thing in these situations and the Salvation Army gives 100% of money collected to the relief centers. http://dfw.cbslocal.com/cbs-11-to-host-disaster-relief-drive-tuesday/
That was a special, bunches of Cowboys football players taking calls yesterday but the numbers are good anytime. My grandson and his sweetie have decided to stay in Austin. Their apartment in Houston is on the second floor but the buildings lower floor has been under many inches of water (still is) so the damage and resulting mold will most likely mean that the complex will be torn down. They will be retrieving their household belongings probably sometime next week when they can get into the building safely. But it appears that Austin will be their new home now.
I'm so glad to hear your grandson and his girlfriend are safe in Austin. The city closest to us, Waco, is preparing to accept refugees. It wasn't designated as an evacuation site, but they expect to be named and accepting evacuees by Saturday. Churches with family centers, the Salvation Army headquarters, school districts and the community college are offering whatever help they can with supplies, integrating the evacuee students into classrooms and college courses, and generally helping relocate families. Baylor U. has offered free football tickets for Saturday when they play a pre-season game against that powerhouse Liberty, and free parking and a meal before the game. Such compassion! And yes, that is sarcasm.
Well at least it will give them some semblance of normalcy, they just need to keep their daughters safe from the football players.
