What have you done today in the Garden?

My garden is still producing beans, kale, swiss chard, tomatoes (not so good with tomatoes this year), basil, potatoes, beets, and carrots. Oh, and bok choi and lettuce and a new kind of cuke: it is round & yellow like a lemon & tastes very mild. Very good.

At home I have various herbs in pots on the back stoop along with several tomato plants, which interestingly are doing better there than at the community garden.

The only thing I did today for the garden was pick up 2 contractor buckets full of used coffee grounds to spread as a mulch.

 

Sounds good, Carolyn and I too had wondered what happened to our own Sjoerd.
I did nothing in the garden today. Rained al day, sometimes very light, but not conducive to garden work.
Our garden is slowly being taken out and only the garlic to be set out before frost.

 

GP: you grow garlic? I do too. I have found it an easily & very reliable crop. Plus I can grow varieties I can get in the markets.

 

Cayuga, I hope to set out 3 rows this week and possibly another 3 in mid October. I'm using some from last year's planting and maybe I can find a different type for later. It's too late to order garlic from seed catalogs.
We use a lot of garlic for cooking and I use crushed garlic to ward off infection. If I feel my glands swollen, out comes crushed garlic. Either in toast or in a cloth and placed on the glands.

 

Growingpains, I too save some garlic heads to plant in the fall, and I use garlic from the grocery also. I dig through the bin to find garlic heads with a little green growth starting, and buy those to break into cloves and plant. It works out fine--good tasting garlic with large heads.

 

That's what I have done previously, just used grocery store garlic. It worked out well except that the heads were smallish. So for this year's crop I bought some garlic from Fedco. The resultant bulbs are great, larger, very fresh, with a different flavor. The size difference rhough may have more to do with the growing seasons: this year we have a lot of rain & sun, last year we had drought.

I have already ordered garlic again this year. Maybe I'll add some grocery store heads for comparisons sake.

 

Gardens are pretty done. We have one garden completely put away and electric fencing taken down. The other garden just waiting on the winter squash and tomatoes to finish ripening. Over all the gardens did not do that well this year. Second year in a row. Yet on the upside the tomatoes were the best yet and the beans also. Tomatoes did id not get any blight first time in several years. Potatoes were fair. We will have enough and some to give away. They are just smaller than usual that's all. Happy harvest to everyone!

 

I picked bell peppers to take to friends who don't have gardens.
Although it isn't something "in the garden" I did bake several loaves of herb breads (herbs from the garden) to go along with the peppers. Our elderly friends really love getting something fresh from the garden, and they don't say "no" to the bread, either!

 

@marlingardener...herb bread? That sounds good. Would you care to share the recipe?

 

@toni I felt weird hitting the 'like' button about your dried leaves & parched landscape, but I am sure you get my intention. So sorry that things are so hot & dry.

 

Cayuga, how kind of you to ask for the recipe. I'll post it later today under the cooking forum. (It's so easy that I'm almost embarrassed to share--there goes my reputation as a baker!)

 

Toni, I felt bad for not clicking the like key, but couldn't because I didn't like.
Marlin, I'm not sure we would have success with store bought garlic. I may try it as it's too late to order.
All I'm doing is taking plants out. We do still get plenty of Zucchini. I took a bag to Fishes & Loaves. The man asked, "Did you see the pile I have ? I don't want to make you angry, but I really don't need any more." I laughed and told him I understood. A lady who was going in to get food did take it. I passed out more today in our trailer park. I gave one young lady fresh Parsley and Basil. She smelled it and said,
I have never had fresh Parsley and Basil before!"
Fortunately the tomatoes have decided to ripen suddenly and grow so fast their skins are bursting. Green beans and Green peppers are still coming in.

 

Thanks so much Carolyn. We have had a number of visitors from overseas this year and I am afraid that I have been doing more socializing than gardening/ hahaha. I am touched that you wondered how I was doing. You are such a nice person.
