Does anyone know what makes a winter squash turn out wet or dry? Last year my buttercup squash were very wet. I like them on the dry side. However, this year they are too dry. Quite mealy in texture so they are not enjoyable either. All the other years the squash have been perfect in dryness and in texture. Just wondering if anyone else have this experience with squash? Thanks
Good question...but no answer. My questions would be: Wonder if it might be weather/moisture during the growing season? Could the seed varieties had changed somewhat? Do you save and plant your own seeds?
That is a great thought,Jewell,thank you. Last year we had a lot of rain and the squash were too wet. This year it was very very dry with the forest fire index in the red most of August when they were growing. So that could very well be the reason why they turn out like they do. All the other years when the squash were the best just must have been perfect growing years. I am using the same seeds as in previous years. I bought way more than I needed at the time. One more year of planting should finish up the old seeds.
