Sjoerd, cattle are not dangerous (except bulls when the heifers are "receptive" to their advances). I can go into the next field with two Angus, a longhorn, and a "mutt" and pick up cow pats to use in the compost pile. They will come look to see what I'm doing, and put their very wet and very dirty noses on my formerly clean tee shirt. I scratch them between their eyes and "coo" at them, and we are all happy.
Around here "running cattle" means you have a herd. It has nothing to do with moving cattle or being chased (thank heavens!). It's just a regional expression that says "I have cattle". I asked a man at the feed store how many head he had, and he said, "Personally, I have one head, and I run 200 head!". I really like that guy!
