Our college student son was invited to a wedding. He was in the double role of pianist and a guest. "Formal" attire required (ie, suit & tie). Unfortunately his dad was napping when he was attempting the tie knotting procedure. Here is his second attempt I missed the photos of the 1st & 3rd attempts as I was involved in trying to figure this out. He then involved his sister And of course, the Internet And many attempts And more discussion Unfortunately he drew the line at a photo of the finished project!! But he did look great. And his piano playing was great too! He may not know how to knot a tie, but he sure can play!
A few years ago our oldest grandson wanted to learn how to tie a tie, so Grampa gave him a book he had for just such a project. There are dozens of ways and he picked out one of the most unusual to learn...but of course I can not find the photo my daughter sent of him. In the day of clip on that was an art that went by the wayside.
I love this!!! I went to an all girl's Catholic school when I was young, and a tie was part of the Winter uniform, so I learned very early how to tie one! I taught the two most basic knots ( simple or half windsor, and windsor) to all 4 of my sons, who scoffed because y'know, they'd never need the skill, but paid attention anyway. Every single one of them since has needed to wear a tie more than once. It was a lot simpler to get a call asking to be reminded of some aspect of tie tying than it would have been to explain it over the phone!!! It's funny, but even in this day of google searches I still find myself of the receipt end of all manner of questions from the kids. Guess Mom's still good for some things!
Cayuga, tell that handsome son of yours that there are "clip on" ties. There's no shame in being unable to knot a tie (or shoelaces for that matter---thank heavens for velcro!).
Ronni we had to wear ties at school too so I knew how to tie them for myself and for others. It's a skill I passed on to all three kids although they hardly even need it. Jane clip on's are a real boon when you're in a rush and have to look your best.
When I was working, I had to use a tie to work everyday and when I come back from a long break it takes me awhile to tie a tie nicely again!
