I watch a couple of Herons a few yards apart. As I photographed one with a fish, he brought it ashore and played pick up and drop down. Then it did it in the water, then ate it. (pics in another post). Then on my return to the other heron, it did the same thing, took a lot of pics.
I never tire of seeing herons fishing. I've seen fishermen cursing them when they catch fish but they haven't had any luck despite expensive tackle.
I have seen a lot less birds this summer than we did last year when they were building our home. Not sure why the numbers are down. Have you noticed that? Great pictures...
We get the birds in the winter, most of the ducks etc, nest on the prairies in the spring and summer and come here for the winter. Same with the other birds that come to the feeders in the winter. We have chickadees, nuthatches, finches and sparrows with the odd woodpecker during the summer. In the winter have had 23 species visit in one day. We don't mark down what comes in the summer but keep a tally during the winter.
Hi @Kildale I know this might sound silly and the way you've explained what they did with the fish...I wonder if they like to eat them dead first or lifeless ….nice pictures by the way
Many of the fish are caught near the shore and in among the sea weed, they wash the weed off and then just swallow the fish.
