As the skit on Hee Haw goes, "What's for dinner, Grandpa?" I have made a batch of homemade vegetable beef soup tonight with potatoes, mushrooms, carrots, celery, onions and garlic. Seasoned it with salt, cumin, tumeric and bay leaves. My family isn't big on peppers so I added fresh hotsauce to my servings (1 tbsp per bowl). Came out very tasty and filling. Got the idea for soup when my wife said she was cold at 70°! What is on the menu tonight for all you GardenStew members?
We had Huron County Pork Stew. It has chunks of pork, chunks of apples and carrots and potatoes, some apple cider, a broth made from roasted pork bones, and a dash of red wine. Those folks in Huron County (wherever it is) sure know a good stew! We had Portugese rolls with it. A filling and warming dinner on a chilly night.
Last night we had a moose roast with potatoes and carrots. Delicious!! I'm not sure what's for dinner today ... maybe some chicken and vegetables.
Everyone must have had the same idea ! We had chicken stew with potatoes tomatoes onions corn ect ! Typically a southern thing ! And hot cornbread !
Doing hamburgers with sauteed asparagus (is the plural asparagii?? I slay me!) and some greenbean casserole. Gotta finish Thanksgiving leftovers this weekend.
Mart honey, that chicken stew with vegetables is a version of Brunswick Stew, originally from Brunswick county in Virginia. Everyone loves that, and yes, it has to be served with cornbread. The first time we encountered it was on a visit to Williamsburg Virginia, and absolutely devoured every morsel on our plates. I make it frequently, in large amounts, and freeze two-serving amounts for later. After we finish up our Thanksgiving left-overs, I may make a vat of Brunswick Stew. Cold weather will arrive eventually (it's in the high 60's now!). Nothing is better than a bowl of Brunswick Stew and a piece of corn bread slathered with butter on a cold night.
Yes indeed ! If I remember correctly the original Brunswick stew was made with rabbit. Have had that on occasion. Its all good.
maybe it is a family recipe someone shared Jane? Huron county pork stew? we have a huron county here but I have never heard of huron county pork stew. sometimes family members identify a particular dish according to where the family member lives? really, it sounds like all the ingredients you would find right here. we have pig farms, apple orchards, plenty of gardens with carrots, and potato farmers, too. seriously sounds regional to me and my region specifically..
Carolyn, your region may very well be the origin of Huron County pork stew. Whoever made it, I thank them! Mart, you are correct--Brunswick Stew was made with rabbit or squirrel originally. Since I'm such a poor shot, I prefer the grocery store chicken version!
Sweet and sour pork...very mild with chestnuts and spring rolls. @Catdaddy6676 you've started something here...where pic's need adding
I made chicken thighs with tomatoes onions garlic white wine over pasta with wilted spinach sautéed in sesame oil. Delicious. But I think I'll try that Huron Cty pork stew. Sounds delicious !
Tonight we are having Our own broad-beans with crispy bacon fat bits, boiled spuds and meat balls au jus. An iceie afterwards is like totally mandatory.
