I was learning about gardening from my grandparents in the late 60's and early 70's. A mis-spent youth, some oats sowing, (not the domestic kind) and I didn't start really gardening until the mid to late 80's. Nowadays, I don't have the stamina in some of my once broken parts to garden much. Have to wait for retirement to be able to go full on again.
Adams - I like your enthusiasm! Two of my 3 kids (in their30s) have the gardening bug from me. They enjoy houseplants and growing veggies. I love to help them, and share my knowledge. I can bring home plant orphans from the nursery for them to add to their geardens.
I am almost old enough to be your grandmother... I have loved gardening all of my adult life... I did not say that I was good at it, but I enjoy it anyway.
I'm 78 yrs old. I started working in a garden when I was about 6 or 7. Started pulling weeds and then hoeing around plants. I don't remember ever not having a garden. If I lived in a town I had flower gardens along side of the house or in the windows. I had large gardens and small gardens. Once we grew vegetables and took them to a Farmer's Market. I used to make garden aprons with a large pocket on the front that fastened in the front. It was for picking purple hulled peas. They could put the peas in the pocket and at the end of the row open the pocket and dump the peas in a bucket. They didn't have to haul a bucket behind them. Now, I live in an apartment with no place for a garden. I only have a large Jade plant in the living room. dooley
My parents had me hoeing and planting when I was five or six years old. I had a flower and vegetable garden when I was in grade school. After more than 60 years of gardening, I hope some day, someone will find me dead with a pair of pruning shears in one hand and a fresh tomato in the other.
I started some seeds indoors last weekend with my great grandkids, aged 4 and 6......Will put them in planters in the spring. Hope they keep interested.
