Oh, that ole grey weather just keeps on keepin' on. Never mind, there were a thing or two to do inside today. The most important was to plant those broadies. Before we could begin playing with the potting soil, we had to bring the little cabinet and sundry kit upstairs out of the storage room. We do the potting, seeding and so forth on the upper floor in the bedroom...there is a special little table on which to work and the windowsill is where the seeds to germinate go. Here is the first group of root trainers and trusty wooden dibber: Here he is dibbing the hole in the cell in which the seed will go: Onec the seeds have pushed down into the hole, covered with vermiculite, the cells must be watered. Finally the job completed, they are lablled and covered....and the waiting begins. We discussed germinating a few cells of spinach, but the Bride wanted to put that off a few days, recalling the serious cold snap we had last year in March. Right then, mates--the real fun here has begun. Are any of you already planting?
We have basil, thyme, parsley, and oregano started on the shelving in the guest bedroom (don't plan on coming to visit until the end of March!). The basil and thyme have moved out from under the dome and are under lights. The parsley and oregano just got planted a couple of days ago, so are heated and domed. The cherry tomatoes will be started next week. I don't have an attractive dibbler like yours--I use a chopstick.
I have started a flat of microgreens. This will be for indoor harvesting. Look at the photo, below. I cut these forsythia some 3 weeks ago! They are just budding out now.
Oh, how I loved forsythia when we lived up north! Here it doesn't do well--too warm. However, our almond trees are in bloom, and the apple and pear trees are showing green bumps that will be leaves. Time to prune! This was photographed a few years ago. The trees are about 12' tall, are shaped, and much more lovely. If the ripping wind stops I'll ask husband to take a photo of our almond trees today.
Thank you for taking us on your planting journey Sjoerd...I especially love the dibble. Cayuga...that forsythia is beautiful!! Marlingardener...love the almond tree! I'm with Marlin....man the heat will be unbearable by then here in Georgia. Yes, we have early and long growing seasons, but we pay for it and so do some of our plants.
Wowwww...that is so cool. I couldn't do that here....the birds are in huge numbers already and they wake up the neighborhood.
You are welcome, Hummer. I am glad that you liked it....you are having a journey all your own, aren't you.
@Sjoerd.....I sure am...lol. Wow @2ofus...that is still mind-blowing to me the amount of snow, while we have 70/80 degree days here. The next few nights are supposed to be in the low 30s, high 20s.
