We have three varieties in the ground now--a yellow keeper, red, and sweet white. We plant them at half the recommended distance, and take out every other one to use as green onions. When we harvest, usually in June, we hang them in the barn to dry. Between the drying garlic and onions, and the hens, we have a very aromatic barn!
The best onions I ever grew, I bought plants from a place in Texas. I must have done something right, and had perfect weather that year, most of them were the size of softballs. Or, for those unfamiliar with a softball, 10 to 12 inches, or 24 to to 30 centimeters. Didn't grow them for sale, but sell them I did. Folks are willing to pay a premium for onions that size.

I planted Egyptian Walking Onions in the fall. Looks like they are making a huge comeback. From what I've been told, I should never need to plant onions again..unless i want to...lol.
