I’m looking out at a soppy, wet scene, as we’ve had a couple inches of rain the past few days.
The weather has been very mild the past month, so I’ve had time to clean up debris from leaves and plants that have gone to sleep.
We’ve had an interesting visitor around lately too, a fox that seems quite comfortable in our neighborhood and around us. It’s cool to see it up close.
Hope you all had a merry Christmas and enjoy a Happy 2020! I’m dormant, and waiting for spring!

Sjoerd, that Appelfloppen looks delicious! Tell me, do they tend towards floppiness?

I took a tour of the garden outside the backdoor today. V-e-r-y c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y as all is ice right now. Found a mini sculpture amidst the dried perennial stalls that has been missing for some time. Refilled the bird feeders. Then retreated to the warmth of indoors!

I seem to have neglected Gardenstew and find that several of you still visit your plots. I left carrots in the ground, but hesitate to dig due to our groundcover. Perhaps I will one warmer day.
The garlic seems reluctant to show this season. Only a few pushed through the soil. I'm concerned because never before has this happened to my garlic.
Sjoerd, we used to make the "Fried apple pies" and oh were they good.
Seeing your "appelfloppen" makes me think I should try them again. We dried apple slices in the sun and used them in winter for the fried apple pies.

Ahhh, Jane you are such a sweet one to say so. I am glad.

Cayu--I think we call them appelflap because one flops them over and over in the batter to coat them.

GP--do your fied apple pies have a little bit of sauce in with the apple bits?

JANE--When we were living and working over there we once invited a group over for the evening and the Bride made some oliebollen for the first time...for them. Do you know that of the whole group only one person took an oliebol and he had to eat it on a plate with a fork and knife. My poor Bride felt so insulted. hahaha. It was a lesson for us. Our saying over here for this situation is-- "What the farmer doesn't know, he doesn't eat", because this same behaviour is prevalent over here too.

Cackle....no doubt. I didn't take it personally, just rolled my eyes and went on with the evening; however the Bride was a bit more invested I reckon.

Sjoerd, I was quite young when last I made Fried Apple pies. I believe we stewed the dried apples, added sugar and cinnamon. The concoction was slightly juicy from cooking and we rolled out a round of dough, placed an ample amount of the apple mixture in with a dab of butter, folded the dough, crimped the edge and fried both sides. I should try my hand at making them again. But I never dry apples now.

I am cutting wood and working on my garden fence. I have leeks, Rucccola, lambs lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, chard and beetroot, radishes, fennel and various lettuces.

Too cold and light drizzle so can't do anything in the garden.

After Logan's and Cayuga's posts, I almost hesitate to mention what I've done in the garden today--cut a nice head of broccoli, checked the lettuce to see if it needed picking again (tomorrow!), and weeded the garlic again. If it makes anyone feel better, I had to wear a jacket while messing about outside.

MG I am glad for you too. I actually read your post with a smile on my face!. I am well able to take vicarious pleasure in others' gardening exploits. It's a finely honed skill. We gardeners in New England have to get good at it.
