Almost everyone knows about WD-40, which loosens frozen moving parts and helps eliminate rust. I use it frequently but never knew where it got its name. It is the 40th combination of lubricants, therefore WD-40. My husband explained this to me as I was squirting WD-40 on a squeaky fan. I'm so happy I married an intelligent and educated man!
It's fine for the uses you've described, but keep it away from electrical contacts. For those you need switch cleaner.
From what I know, WD-40 is a moisture repellent very fine penetrating oil. It was invented because nuclear warhead carrying missiles and their supporting machinery needed to be kept in perfect working order at all times. I just Googled up what I knew, and found this page: https://www.wd40.com/history/ Today far better products are on the market, for example, I personally use Antecor-40, as this is certified for firearms use also. Whereas WD-40 is known to damage the pasteurization (chemical bluing) rust preventive surface coating of weapons. But of course, WD-40 is the iconic image that instantly pops in our minds whenever we need to unscrew a rusty nut and bolt. Now look at the picture below!
Back in the 1970`s it was going round that it helped arthritic joints ! My mother tried it,,,didn`t help ! ACF 50 is a better lubricant !
Water displacement?? I would never have gotten that. Keeps water out of moving metal parts, preventing rust & corrosion? The things one learns on this site.
I use it for getting that annoying Price sticker residue off items I’ve purchased!!Works like a charm!!
