If any movie studio wants to remake Hitchcock's The Birds, our farm is going to audition. Brown-headed cowbirds are passing through (at least we hope they are passing) and fly in flocks of a hundred or more. This is more . . . .
Tweet-tweet, baby. What a sight that is, Jane. I didn’t know cowbirds migrated, but then I do not know all that much about your birds.
Cayuga, in ordinary years we have a lot of migratory birds. With the wildfires in California, the early winter in the northwest, and other climate abnormalities, we may have fewer birds this migration season. The birds may change their migration routes. Jerry, the brown-heads are called cow birds because they follow cow herds. Cows are in pastures with lots of seeds, and the cowbirds feast on seeds. Cattle egrets do the same, but because the hooves stir up insects. If we can get a cowbird to pose on a longhorn, I'll post a photo! The bad thing about them is that they lay their eggs in other birds' nests, and since their eggs hatch earlier than the host bird's, they steal the space, food, and often toss the host bird's eggs out of the nest. Not very nice birds!
