We went out for a stroll in our neighbourhood and saw that the work of replacing the streetlights in the old centre and harbour has made it to our neighbourhood. Someone got the bright idea to install old- fashioned street-lamps. I suppose that it is an action that is good for the local economy, but also they eye good...if one likes the old- fashioned look. The first foto is a very short stretch of footpath from the little bridge up to our dijk. This is the dike that our home straddles. The first three old houses there on the left are landmarks in our town. Here is a closer look at one of the lamps: These electrical imposters are in character for our old centrum which has structures built in the 14, 15 and 1600’s. We have had candles, oil, gas and now light bulbs. Just over the little bridge leading away from the quay where the people used to practice shooting bows and arrows, crossbows and later muskets. There is a little board showing the harbour and the water taxi with the stops it will take you to. One can travel from one place to another or charter a tourist trip with historical info over the sites you come by.
How I would love to see lamps like those in our village. Somehow the modern, sleek LED's and halogen ones we have just don't fit with the 17th century buildings.
Sjoerd, you live in such a lovely place! Texas is young, and buildings are not very attractive, so it is such a pleasure to see your older, prettier town. Those lamps just enhance the whole look.
Thanks for your nice comments, Jane. The municipality tries to enhance the historic area for us and to attract tourists perhaps. I do like the old-fashioned look of those lamps and they add to the ambiance of the historic quarter. Sadly those lamps will not be placed further down the dike to where I live...but I can understand it because our end of the dike has a modern style so the two styles would just clash.
What a beautiful and charming town Sj! I love the old buildings and those beautiful street lamps. Also your footpath to the town center. It's not a sidewalk running along a road with cars, right? Just a footpath. I like it.
Yes, the footpath does not run alongside a road, it goes through a tree and bush section of the harbour area. The path runs up to the dike from the bridge...then it goes along the old seawall and along the crest of the dike. It is a pleasant and peaceful area.
