Sojerd, no the lugging is not finished, but I may be! We have seven raised beds, plus the open garden bed. My plan is to deplete the one compost pile and start a fresh one in that spot. The best laid plans of mice and men . . . .
We use the raised beds for short-term vegetables (broccoli, lettuce, peas, etc.) and the open bed for long term veggies like potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash. The local food pantry can take any excess, and I do tend to plant an excess!

I believe we are all blessed in some way, just need to take some time to smell the roses....
We have one acre here which is an average size around these parts. we have mostly good neighbours and we purchased the land the minute we saw the for sale notice. We would not know what anybody would do with the land and could not take the chance for the low price it is costing us..We want peace and that is the only reason we bought it... p1290667.jpg

We are on our second cut now and it really does tidy the garden up after the too long Winter season. March is once again being changeable weatherwise a few good blue skies days but cold winds so still wearing winter clothing..
My new venture, growing my own plants, it's taking shape.

Cosmos 1st to appear and have already potted some of them into larger pots..Keen, you bet I am.
Tilling... I call that turning over the land, but Tilling sounds a good word to use for it.. been sorting out our Veggie Plot..rather small but..weeds gone soil dug over and all ready now for the 1st lot of Potatoes to go in Today....

Sjoerd, we have seven raised beds, and a fairly large "unraised" garden for larger crops like tomatoes, potatoes, beans, etc.
I still have quite a bit of lugging to do. The plan is to empty the one compost bin and start fresh in it while letting the other bin finish up. That's the plan, but the best laid plans of mice and men . . . .

Well Jane, you know what would be interesting? An overview of your acres. Somehow I did not realise that you gardened such a large area. Chapeau !

Sjoerd, I hope this Google Earth overview is of interest. We have 9.44 acres with 1/2 Red Gate Farm.jpg acre of back and front lawn, an acre of barn lot, an acre pond, about 6 acres of pasture, and one acre of gardens, both flower and vegetable. It has changed a bit since this aerial photo was taken. We have more trees now and an outside chicken coop in front of the barn.

Thanks so much Jane. The Bride and I thought that the arial view puts it in perspective a bit. You have a lovely great spread. I had not realised that an Interstate was so close to you though. Do you suffer much from the noise, or do you just get used to it?
I couldn’t see the raised beds of course, but you guys gave a comfortable amount of land for gardening.

The highway is a state highway, not an interstate, and there is very little noise. We have trees along our fence line and that is a great noise abatement. The highway is pretty much car traffic, not trucks, and unless an ambulance or police car goes down the highway, we don't hear much.
After I get my "lugging" done and the gardens planted, I'll discuss how comfortable we are with our amount of land for gardening!

    Thanks for your explanations..
I can’t wait to hear your enlightening land comments.;)
That pond of yours looks like a tadpole.

Jane, thanks for that aerial photo! Helps to really visualize your property. You do have quite a spread!

I started more seeds today: broccoli, lettuce, kale, spinach. I'll see if I can post a photo of the carddons Sj.

I am overwintering geraniums, a fuchsia, and some other kind of plant I've been forgotten the name of. Things are getting a bit crowded down here in the basement. I'll be needing the space before long for veggie seedlings.

Jane? I find no post from Jane, but keep on lugging.
Dirt Mechanic, do you save grass clippings for compost?

It's a bit early, but I gave the lawn a feed and mosskill treatment.
I buy the cheap soluble lawn food from Wilkinsons and add iron sulphate I buy on eBay.
I also gave all the roses in pots a feed as they are all producing new foliage.

Yes. Actually I mulch mostly, but occasionally I will sweeper them up, like after power raking and aeration. You cannot do enough for clay.

    Wow, look at that!
You are really getting a head start there. How delightful to see that. The cardoon seedlings look healthy.
Your pink geraniums have come through the winter in good form. They look like regular plants from here, are they that or cuttings that you took?

You have inspired me to have a further look in my seed box to see if I can perhaps plant a few more things today. We have to sit home all day today anyway to accept the ordered groceries.
