Hello everyone, I'm Susan and this is my first post, so bear with me! I'm anxious to see flowers, herbs and hopefully, a few easy to grow ( ??? ) veggies in pots this year, and maybe a few flowers in a real garden, but I'm not a spring chicken anymore, and all the bending over and heavy lifting may slow me down, but I plan to TRY .. and right off I have a BIG question ! I've read that I shouldn't throw away eggshells .. that they can be used to help flowers and plants grow ?! ... and I"m starting to save and crush eggshells already ... but is there ANYTHING I should NOT put them near??? I plan to mix them, very well crushed into the soil where they will do the most good, and I'm sure many of you know how to do this, and I thank you in advance for your help, and look forward to a fun summer ahead, and maybe even getting to chat with some nice new green thumb friends. : )
Hello and welcome! Eggshells are actually an excellent natural fertilizer! So I crush them up into a fine powder, and give to all my Devil's Ivy plants. Normally, Devil's Ivy leaves stop growing at about this size below. But my plant continues to about this size! All because I gave it crushed eggshells, and nothing else.
Hello and welcome I put egg shells in the compost bins and then when it's ready i spread it on the garden.
Hello Susan and Welcome. I am new myself to the Forum but not new to gardening Like Logan our eggshells go straight in one of our composters. One of ours Hubby made out of old pallets, they work very well, with plenty of air flow, all helps to break down everything quite well, without any additives needed...
I almost hesitate to say this because it is so obvious, but you ought not to apply egg shells or any form of lime or chalk to plants that are meant to grow in acid soil—plants like Rhododendrons, Blue Hydrangeas, blueberry bushes, Camellia and Skimmia bushes to name a few.You can search out a longer list on the internet. There are many plants that will benefit from chalk. I add some to my compost from time to time so that it will not become too acid.
Yes I wouldn't put the shells straight on them but it would be alright in homemade compost for the other flowers, I put it around my roses.
Hi there and welcome from Texas ! As far as vegetables they all benefit from the eggshell calcium ! Cant think of any that do not ! I am not a flower person though ! Just edibles ! I am not a spring chicken either and started container gardening couple of years back ! Its not hard and tends to do well ! Just do not use potting soil ! I made that mistake ! Went for topsoil this year !
O my! Thanks to all ! ... So many replies, and the gorgeous photos from S-H in Pakistan !? ( Did I get that right? I hope!) I'm overwhelmed a bit ... NO, a LOT !!! ... so interesting to see people here from all over the world!?? and O, how I envy those in "rain forest" and tropical locations ... in the midwest here in Illinois, the weather cuts our gardening short when the hard frost hits us in autumn, and then, unless you can make cuttings to bring inside for the winter, gardening is a dead issue for months. Our local weather girl always warned us we cannot even trust the weather in spring until after Mother's Day ... so that takes a big chunk out of our growing year. Back to Garden Stew ... I must warn everyone that at the moment I'm caught between two computers, a very old one and a very new one that I'm trying to find my way around, and my plate is full of so many things right now, I don't have a lot of time to devote to learning to navigate everything, especially including this site!!! ... but the good news is that Garden Stew seems a delightful spot to have landed in ! I appreciate all the friendly responses, and this site has much more to offer than I ever expected ... other subjects like PETS (I'm an animal LOVER!) , and interior design, and so much more! ... it's a full banquet of things I love, and I hope to have more time in the future to really settle in and get to really enjoy all this site has to offer, and to hear from people all around the globe ... which I did NOT expect, but what a DELIGHT it truly is !!! Yes that is correct, I am from the coastline of Karachi city, (which is a megacity of over 20 million) - Situated right at the shores of the Arabian Sea, Southern Pakistan. Climate of my area is always very hot and humid. We are basically a tropical coastal semi desert...
