I have really enjoyed my Hellebore this year. They are flowering more than any other year so far. I have babies like crazy but they have lost their labels.
Yes. I love hellebores too. That white one is gorgeous. Anyone know when is a good time to divided them? Some of my clumps are getting quite big.
I have divided them in fall and spring..actually whenever i feel the need. I put them in a pot and nurture them. I don't save any dirt around them. I take just the root system. Works every time.
I divide things in mid- october and mid-march, but you can cheat and do in now for instance. Whether or not I do it is determined how the weather is going...once spring is seriously underway, I would put it off until october. These comments are for here, where you live the time frames could be before me or after me.
Lovely hellebore waretrop, I have a lot from seed from one plant, got mostly purple, red and some white.
I love hellebores. Every year I tell myself I'm going to buy some for my garden, yet I still have none! My timing is way out!
I tried to divide one of my hellebores today and made such a butchered job of it, I retreated in disarray. The other hellebores sighed with obvious relief.
@carolyn , this also looks similar to my unidentified plant. However, mine is ultra tiny... https://www.gardenstew.com/threads/very-small-plant-with-tiny-flowers.42727/
Oh dear, Cayu— what must that have looked like? You know, when I think back, I recall that I divided them with a spade. A clean cut through the middle if the clump. The divided plants did oké, but they struggled. I am not really sure dividing them is a wise thing to do, looking back. Your new plants may struggle too and I wonder if they will ever be as lovely as the original clump, mine were not. I had more clumps, but their quality were not up to standard. Maybe those other hellebores of yours are indeed breathing a sigh of relief. Chuckle. Once again your and my soils and conditions may not be the same, so hopefully your little plants will do better.
Sjoerd, I think the mistake I made was not cutting straight through the center. I tried to cut an edge piece off and all I got were rootless shoots. Very sad.
That's a shame @Cayuga Morning I wouldn't divide them, they don't like being moved as well. If you want more plants you could grow them from seed. Just let the plant go to seed and let the seeds fall by the plant, the next year you'll have a lot of seedlings come up, I do.
Cayu— Oops ! Yeah, I have done that too. It is sad. Ach, next time better. I think that I agree with Loggy as far as this particular plant goes.... but having said that, a garden neighbour lady divided her helleborus last fall and offered me a half. I took it, had one flower this spring, but the plant itself is looking super healthy at the moment. I am surprised.
