What have you done today in the Garden?

I've cut it up, put it into a roasting tray, pour a lot of honey on it to sweeten it, cover with cooking foil and put in oven until it's tender. Let it cool portion it up and put in the freezer. I'll use it for apple and rhubarb pie or a crumble or anything else that i can think of.

Last year I had 56 lbs over a few months but I do have a lot of plants and put in freezer and I've nearly ran out.
This year it's been very late because of the cold weather.

 

Sounds good Logan. I have a small rhubarb plant in the Community Garden. I might just harvest some for the first time this year.

I scarified the front lawn, it's small so didn't take long and I tied up a few clematis. They're really growing fast now.

 

Potted on 14 chillie plants into their final pots,got 10 more to do all for the conservatory.

 

Weeded two and a half raised beds. The soil is still so moist that cultivating is very difficult. Later I'll pot up more basil and marjoram.

 

To wet to do anything today, like a few of my friends, I cried off playing golf today, left it to the visitors and "those who get bank holidays."

 

Busy day in the garden.
Shoveled 5 contractor buckets of compost from my bin and spread it at the Community Garden.
Things are looking pretty good there: . peas are up, so is the lettuce & kale & spinach. Harvested another handful of asparagus... The asparagus is coming in like gang busters right now.

At home, I potted up perennials for the local garden club sale, raked what I call my meadow, raked the pool deck & started raking the pool tarp.
Then I thought it was time to call it quits.

Today, I cleaned reed from the banks and centre of the canal. I weeded in front of the bee hives and re-enforced the wall of the canal. I also removed some dandelion plants...not all, but some. The main chore today was to rake away the last of the winter mulch, dig holes and chuck in leaf mould and compost. Courgettes will be planted there this season. All four quadrants have now been cleaned and made ready for planting.

 

Yesterday first rainless day in a week. I planted the rest of my onion bulbs. I weeded and harvested some strawberries (maestro). They taste sweet even with low sunshine. I harvested salad greens. I planted carrots and radishes. I turned compost.

 

Now then Odif—THAT’S what I call a “springtime update”!!
Oh mate it does my heart so good to see those blushing strawbs of yours. They bring back all sorts of memories and fantasies of their flavour and how we use them.
It was good that you had a break in the weather so that you could get some other chores done as well.

Yesterday potted on the rest of the Chilli plants got 16 altogether and 8 sweet peppers.
Potted on the rest of the verbena bonerenses got 48 of those.

 

Logan what will you do with all those verbenas and peppers?

Sjoerd, is it the job of each owner to keep their section of canal clear of reeds? And how does one do this? Do you have hip waders, a skiff, or just really long arms?

 

Hey Cayu— Yes indeedy, it is the responsibility of each allotmentier to keep the stretch of canal which runs along their allotment clean, so the water can flow freely.

How one does this? Well the club has specialised tools to do this with: long-handled rakes and saws, there is a small boat and some folks have waders. After my bee sting sloot plunge I am loathe to get in that canal. I have a variety of rakes and schoffels that I can use to remove those pesky reeds and rubbish that floats down the canal. I am a tallish bloke with long enough arms, so it is not a problem for me. There are some small women that must struggle, but they probably have coerced their men to lend a hand.
But the short answer is that there are tools available to all members to accomplish this mandatory duty.

 

Nothing today, as it was golf this morning, I picked up a couple of bags of kibbled nuts for "Cyril the squirrel" from Wilko's on the way home. You have to get what you want and then some, as their stock availabilty is often poor and particularly on pet stuff.
The cheap hedgehog pellets I bought from Wilko's on Tuesday that I left in a dish outside 'arry's "place in the country" and for the hedgehog that comes into the front garden, had both been eaten.

I need to to get shot of all the catkins on the lawn that have blown off next door's "unsocially tall" trees, but that can wait until tomorrow.

Nothing on the camera last night as for some reason it didn't record anything not even me. It may be that I didn't have the SD card properly engaged or I might have left some grease from my hands on it. I've given the contacts a wipe over with switch cleaner and I've rearranged the rose pots, so the camera has a better field of vision.
