The Daylily is the Hemerocallis "Razzle Dazzle Them" Two Buds at this point have attempted to open... stopped on partial way and withered. We noticed on the same stalk, buds that had spurs or bumps on their surfaces. Currently there are three stalks on the plant... only one of the stalks has buds with these enations (irregularities). I read that those spurs could be possibly caused by thrips. I've included several photo links for your review: the buds as well a withered lily that I cut open. I saw no larvae or sign of insects... there was just a wetness the was somewhat slimy. The lily was purchased from a very reputable grower with several others. All have bloomed beautifully. MY QUESTIONS: WHAT''s GOING ON? HOW SHOULD I ADDRESS/TREAT IT? SHOULD I USE A SOAPY INSECTICIDE ON THE BUDS? Your help and feedback are greatly appreciated. Looks dodgy. Sorry I can’t help much, never seen this on my day Lilies, cut the stalk out and get rid of it. If it is thrips, neem oil will get rid of it.
Those bumps are normal on some daylillies, but that dark thread-like area is not. Did that just occur or is that where you tried cutting the bud open? This may be a silly question, but you are sure you aren't simply missing the opening of the bud? It is a daylily afterall, meaning the flower only lasts a day. Blink & it has passed. If that's not the issue then I don't know. I've never seen this. I'd do what Odif suggests, cut the flowering skape off & dispose in the trash ( ie obviously not the compost).
Wow, pretty daylily!! Is this the first year you have had this plant? If not, how has it done in past years? I have had blossoms that had problems opening, I would give them an "assist". I can see in pic #1 it has ruffled edges. As CM said if you miss opening day then you are out of luck. It does not appear that is the case in pic #1, Pic #2 may be the day after. The blossom in Pic #3 looks to be 3-4 days old. You may get another chance however, later in the season, as this daylily is a re-bloom. Jerry
@Cayuga Morning No, I'm not missing the opening of the bud. Our home is surrounded by a variety of day lilies, we're pretty familiar with their opening and closing.
@Garden Experimenter Jerry we planted this last summer... and this is the first season it has bloomed. We have about 1/2 dozen varieties of day lilies... so we are aware of their cycle of opening and closing. The Avitar I use is one of our day lilies. Pic# 2 was taken the day we expected it to be open. Pic #3 is my cutting the wilted bud/flower off and dissecting it to see if it was invested with either larvae or maggots. We purchased 2 different cultivars from the same grower. The other opened and performed gloriously. We were excited to see how this would open and bloom... so we've been watching it daily. We currently have three buds on the plant that are starting to crack open... We are assuming given that it is now 9:00PM where we are that at least one of those buds will be open by tomorrow. I've attached a photo of the stage of where those buds are at this current time. The bud on the upper right is the furthest. The photo is not the best but it will give you a sense that they should be opening within the next 24 hours.
It looks like thrips to me. I have one daylily and it gets the same thing every year. I just remove the buds as soon as I can tell if it is going to be an infected one, and let the rest bloom normally. I do get rid of those infected buds though very carefully. If you try the soapy water cure let me know how it works for you. There are more harsh commercial solutions available. Of course they will not bring your buds back. The thrips in my area of our complex are too bad to have a variety, others some 200 metres away have no problem. Good luck with your daylilys, let us know how it goes.
Several members on another Day Lily Forum suggested that perhaps, due to thel length, shape and complexity of the ruffled edges that the pedals might be getting hung up on each other in their attempt to open... It turns out that they were right. As you see from the night photo above, three other buds began opening late yesterday afternoon.... This morning you could see that two of them needed a little help in disengaging their pedal edges... a bit hooked on each .... and, thus, they finished opening with their splendor. (See Photo) The pedals are long (the diameter of the flower 6.5") with ruffled and convoluted edges and you can see how they could get themselves into trouble.
