What have you done today in the Garden?

Other things happened so not much outside. Hard freezes predicted every night this week. It will be a good test of the chill tolerant seeds I planted.

Mostly just watered and checked seedlings.
Carnations, Thyme, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Chilis, micro Tomatoes.

Also a bud I planted off a ginger root sprouted. I had given up on it.

 

Picked up sticks. Chased down the runaway puppy. Picked up sticks. Chased the puppy the other direction. Even with a radio collar she escapes. I have all these cool weather seeds I was to put out today, but chased the puppy. And she gets so sullen when she gets a zap. I am doing this wrong.

 

@Dirtmechanic Puppies are so high energy! It took Rufus a couple of years to calm down. Now I sort of forget how much effort it was. Thinking about getting him a buddy, but not sure about that. Lot of work and challenge, but worth it.

 

Been helping hubby prune one of the apple trees and put all the prunings in a pile in the back garden for bugs and things.

It is storming here. The weather forecast looks good for tomorrow here. I hope to pop out to the lottie for a brief visit. It is way too wet for pruning here though. Perhaps mid-march.

Emptied one of the compost bins. It was sunny but still a bit cool.

 

Nothing today had to go out.

 

We finally got around to starting our jungle room last Friday, 2/18 and already have everything except the peppers sprouting. There’s spinach, peas, cucumbers, Roma tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, and of course the peppers.

 

Bought some soluble weed feed and moss kill for the lawns. Probably a bit early for it, but I'll give it a go tomorrow if it's fine and dry and another in a month's time.
I've some cyclamen to plant out that are presently in a wicker basket, a Christmas present to my wife from a friend. They were supposed to be an indoor display, but they've spent their life so far on the patio steps, so I may not kill them off.
Yesterday I gave the roses (all 28 of 'em) which all have noticeable foliage growth, a dose of "Sulphur Rose" hoping to steal a march on any blackspot invasion.
I keep puting dry hedgehog food in a tiny dish on 'arry's patio, I leave putting it out each day until it starts to get dark, so if he wakes up he's a chance of finding it (and a dish of water), before the birds in the morning.

 

Today I planted a few seedlings outdoors - thyme and Rudbeckia. It's very early but there is rain and mildness predicted for a few days. I think these are resilient plants and I want to make some room under the LEDs for other plants. Also planted some shallot seedlings outside.

I noted that Radishes and Spinach have germinated in the raised bed, despite below freezing temperatures for several days.

I was tired but trying to stay away from the computer. So I disassembled some old cedar picket fence sections. Most of the wood is actually quite good. I started cutting it into 22 inch lengths which I will use vertically for sides of an extra raised bed - sort of. I also cut four of the pressure treated 2 x 4's into 8 foot lengths for horizontal members. There is more to do but it is a start. This bed will be sort of an open bottom box. Inside it will be eight large fabric plant pots, or plastic containers, about 20 inch diameter and 18 inches deep, on pallets. It sounds odd but I think it will work.

 

Snow peas, spinach, kale, chard, carrots, lettuce, rosemary, radish, a hardy fig and 2 kiwi magically got planted today. And some paddle cactus fruits for speculation.

 

Chicago Hardy? I have that one and it's quite good.
