I had never eaten fresh salmon so I bought a nice fillet at the market ! Looked up a few recipes and decided on an orange glazed salmon ! Takes a while for the glaze but it tasted fantastic ! Was well pleased ! Then for dinner I seared the salmon,,applied the glaze with the orange slices on top and finished in the oven ! Cooked fresh asparagus and thought it would be a really good meal ! Then when time to eat came my first bite said .. its just fish ! I could have went to the pool and caught fish with more flavor for a lot less money ! I didn`t even finish mine nor hubby ! That saiid however the orange glaze was excellent ! Next time I will put it on chicken !
We have Salmon on a regular basis. Always tastes good. Never put anything on it though, just gently cooked in a little butter.
You went through all those preparations and came out disappointed on the other end? That's so sad. We eat quite a bit of salmon. We bake it in the oven and serve with boiled potatoes, cucumber salad, and sour cream dressing. We cook and serve halibut the same way, but it still tastes very different. (Not really a "we" - husband cooks, I support him by eating his cooking.)
Sorry to hear about this Mart. I know that I steer away from farmed salmon for similiar reasons. We had wild sockeye last night ( frozen not fresh). Hubby's favourite salmon sauce is : 1/4 c pure maple syrup, 2 Tbs chives, 1/2 Tbs butter, 2 tsp creamy dijon mustard, 1/4 tsp salt. Bring to a boil, simmer 1 -2 minutes and serve over the salmon. Sounds like an odd combination, but I would encourage anyone to give it a go. ( He actually like his salmon cooked in it, I like a wee bit on top) The orange sauce on chicken sounds like a great idea.
The key to the Salmon is its type and its freshness. Frozen is ok off the boat. So many times I have been getting the long end of a distribution chain salmon. You will never make chum or dog salmon tasty except to dogs. Coho or reds, silvers, king etc are where my yesssses come from. Pink is for smoking.
Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the salmon...I still can’t get over the blandness that you experienced. I mean, when we eat it we just quick-fry it in butter and it is delicious. I am not exaggerating. We eat it with a smear of pastinak and some garden beans. Of course sometimes we get hold of some genuine Norwegian salmon and then it is REALLY a feast in the tent. Never-you-mind though, ‘cuz orange chook is nothing to scoff at.
Sorry to hear about your salmon Mart. We do not get fresh salmon here only frozen. I cooked it the way Palustris did but I season it a little with salt. It is delicious with coleslaw. Hmm ... missed eating salmon, haven't eaten it for a few years now because it is so costly here Orange glaze with chicken is always yummie!
Many years ago (like 53) when we lived in Mid Wales the hotel used to buy fresh Dyffi Salmon to serve to the guests. Now that was something else. Not even sure that salmon even go up the river these days. The salmon we get here is definitely the farmed type and it is still tasty. Cannot get over the way so many delicately flavoured foods are smothered in strong flavoured things these days.
So sorry you had that disappointment mart! And after all that work too! I don't know what could have gone wrong. Maybe salmon just isn't your thing? Your orange glaze sounds delicious and I like your idea of putting it over chicken. I might try that. @Melody Mc. we stay away from farmed salmon too due to concerns about pollution. I bet though the salmon served in restaurants is farmed. When I have ordered it, it has tasted fine.
Mart... this is absolutely the truth. its just fish! My son tried to get me to eat a bite when we went out to dinner when we were inZapata last year ... well needless to say I pushed it back outta my mouth and asked if he wanted it back. horrors. it was just strong and nasty. give me talapia any day.
