Far too hot to do anything today other than some watering.
I watched and recorded two Bette Davis films on BBC2. "Dark Victory" and "Now Voyager." Not strictly "film noir" but I've added them to that file on one of my Humax recorders.
Both have music by Max Steiner. In my opinion the master of "incidental music" for films.

If you're unaware, it's hard to imagine how many films for which he wrote the music.

I was able to harvest some cherry tomatoes off of the Dwarf Red Robins, some of our first June berry strawberries ( In July hahaha) and watered the cucumbers and tomatoes. I cleaned up the bottoms of the tomatoes and thinned some larger leaves. The cucumbers have babies. I harvested artichokes and they will be for supper tomorrow. They are a little damaged from the Lygus, but hopefully still okay to eat. We will find out. :) A neighbour came by for some veggies, and I picked her an early cabbage, some carrots, swiss chard and a large head of romaine. The bundle of cherries will be a greek salad for dinner tonight with some garlic toast. The slugs are having feasts right now, and into everything. It's a fight to get the cauliflower before they do. I'm hoping when I do my usual 3 am wake up, to have the gumption to go out on slug patrol and remove a few dozen.

Sjoerd, we won't be up to midnight or after processing vegs. However, I did make tomato sauce from the last picking of Romas, and checked the hanging herbs to see if they were ready to jar. Nope, so that will wait for another day!

What a difference in different climates! @Sjoerd harvested beans already! I just planted mine! I could have a few weeks sooner, but they had to wait for the garlic to be harvested, which I did for that raised bed today.

This is an Italian variety called "Music".

Then I watered the soil, added coffee grounds and biochar, cultivated by hand, planted bush beans (variety is "Contender"), replaced the useless 1/4" soaker hoses with functional drip tubing, tested it, and covered the bed with anti-bird netting.

Depending on who you read and believe, Contender bears as early as 40 days, or 50 or 55 days, but still earlier than most others. I don't believe those super fast numbers. Last year I planted Tenderette and Blue Lake Bush on Jul 8, started harvesting on Sept 25, roughly 77 days for varieties listed as ready in 55 days. I think my cooler climate slows them down.

I also dug up an oriental poppy root, dry and dormant for the summer, and planted in the meditation garden. Then I hand pollinated the Buttercup and Dakota Dessert squashes, and the Costata romanesco and Saffron squashes, harvested some summer squashes, and watered. I fertilized the sweet corn. I stomped on some mole hills. Now I'm tired and grouchy :setc_039:.

Picked some white currants and watered the blueberries earlier this morning. Run out of rain water so they'll have to have tap. Done it before so they should be ok.

Eleven of us played golf this morning, starting at 9.00am, in two four-balls and one three-ball. I was with the three ball out first.
I had a 50 factor sunscreen spray. I had my anti-UV umbrella up on my electric trolley, had plenty of cold water in two flasks and as always wore, a golf cap. But took that off whenever I was walking along the fairway under my umbrella. The heat wasn't much of a problem, there was a very slight breeze. We were held up a bit by slow play by a two-ball in front of us, but still got round in three and a half hours. Otherwise, just a normal Monday.
We had to wait in the bar after a shower and change for the best part of an hour until the second four-ball came in.
Went to the post office shopping on the way home, the heat coming off Sainsbury's car park was tremendous as I walked across it.
Had lunch then gave the acer palmatums a mist spray and 'arry's house a bit of a cooling spray. Cleaned up his food station, fed the birds and put fresh water in the bird baths.

I'll do some more watering around 8.00pm tonight.

I'm now watching the cricket on TV. Lots of "dire warnings," about the heat on the TV for the snowflakes. If people are just sensible about it, then it shouldn't be a problem. But it would seem many haven't the sense, or assumed unable, to take responsibilty for themselves.

    That's a serious fence @Daniel W.

The Bride's back is not healed @Sjoerd? She has injured it? Please tell her I'm so sorry & hope she gets relief soon.

I weeded then spread compost on the asparagus bed. Then put salt match hay over it all. Hoping to keep in the moisture from last night's rain. We are having a drought here.

I've begun cutting back the overgrowth in my perennial garden. And the shrubs.

Yes Cayu, the Bride has injured her back. She has been down for three weeks. She is sick and tired of its crippling nature.
