Are you having drought where you are?

We have not had rain here, except for 1 light shower last Friday, since early May. (A certain friend was grousing about the rains)... I would be very happy for rain. This time of year it takes a large tropical storm or hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico to break any drought. Hurricane Ike in fall of 2008 was a drought buster for many, and wreaked havoc over 11 states, including Missouri.

Sorry for all of you trying to deal with drought. So far, I have been hauling water, and running the sprinkler on my garden most days. I cannot do it too much. My poor grapevines are having a difficult time, so I am trying to save them. Hay and feed have gone up quite a bit. The last time we had drought here (2017?), I had to buy alfalfa cubes out of Canada for my horse and they were not cheap.

My poor rhubarb might be done? The ants and Japanese beetles have not left it alone, despite much watering, and manure tea, etc. I did break down and buy some Sevin dust, but it might be too late? I HATE using such things, but have lost a lot of other rhubarb plants.

A friend who farms for her living might be calling it quits. She has not had rain since April, and has lost a lot of her plants.

We have been praying for rain here.

ps, I did see 1 semi with a huge load of hay on the road a week or two ago, but not any others. I have no idea where he got such lovely hay (large round bales) or where he was headed. It was great horse hay IF he could keep it dry until needed.

 

Hot and dry here right now. I for one welcome the drought. Some decent thunderstorms would be great. For once my tomatoes are doing really well. Everyone here is melting in the heat, I love it though. I haven’t felt such delicious warmth for years. It is 14 15 Celsius in the mornings here, so there is freshness too. Low 30’s in afternoon. My garden is wood chipped and mulched so there is less water escape and I don’t have to water everything every day.

So now max here is lower than the minimum in the nights when I lived in Botswana in my youth and the rains were late. 115f 45c in day and 90f about 33c in nights. Night swimming it was and climb into bed still wet. So here now. 15c 60f early morning (I need a jumper when I go to my garden at 6am) and about 90f 32c in day. I like it. Just 40km from here in figueres or Perpignan is 10c hotter.

 

We haven't had rain for weeks and there won't be for another 2 weeks or so. The temp on Monday and Tuesday will be 38c.
I don't use a sprinkler or a hose I just water the bedding plants and pots. No hosepipe ban as yet.

 

I prefer the cold myself. I do hope and pray we get good rains soon. Heat makes me sick.

Farmers in Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere have to sell off their livestock prematurely and take a loss on them.

My yard and everyone else's are burnt to a crisp, the trees are dropping leaves too early, bushes and shrubs are shriveled and dying maybe.

We desperately NEED RAIN here.

 

This is our weather for Monday and Tuesday

 

We have been fairly dry for the past few weeks, but thankfully it hasn't been too hot. But that all changes next week with temperatures in the 30's (celsius)
Every long range chance of rain that gives me hope seems to disappear as it gets closer. Right now looks like rain on Wednesday, but we'll see. My rain barrels will be empty by then.

 

We were supposed to have a bit of rain next Wednesday but that seems to be disappearing as days go past.

 

We've been asked not to use sprinklers and power washers by our water company.but we don't use them.

 

Still no rain, and communities around us are on water conservation. Like Logan, we don't sprinkle the lawn, use a power washer (unless you count my husband sweeping the patio!) and we use saved rainwater to water plants.
Being Texas, car washes are limited to four hours a day. Hey man, y'all can't drive a dirty truck!

 

we were so dry. no rain for the month of June and barely any in July until yesterday. it rained a nice gentle rain for the entire afternoon and into the night. we have been irrigating the corn and beans. we were dropping the level of the pond by 4+ inches each time we watered.

 

Wow, we had a surprise day of rain today and I couldn't be happier! I was out there in the rain planting the last of my annuals that I didn't plant because the ground was too dry. They were watered and then watered in by the rain, how perfect!

 

Lucky you. We are not forecast to have rain for the rest of July. Garden is dying.
