Here in the northeast (Me being NY) the weather has been horrible. Unseasonably cool then extreme heat. Had success with tomatoes, peppers lettuce and carrots. Did ok with beans and potatoes. Cucumbers, Melons were a disaster. Eggplant is still up in the air. Started my fall crops (beets cabbage turnips and lettuce spinach) hopefully they will do better.
Clay, you are not alone. Our vegetables have been up and down this year. The tomatoes, lettuce, and broccoli did well while the bell peppers just didn't do anything. The potatoes, onions, and green beans were so-so, and the squash just went to zucchini heaven without providing anything. Let's hope that the fall brings a better garden!
Everybody is complaining about the heat. For the next couple years it may be worth planting earlier than normal in the spring and later in the second season. I read an article about that Tonga volcano increasing mesosphere water vapor as much as 10 percent and they said it would act to warm the earths surface slightly for a number of years.
I'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult season, Clay. Last year was a lousy year for me. I gave up and let it go wild. This year the drought is hitting us hard, but the air is so humid I'm able to keep our rain barrels full by emptying our dehumidifiers into them. I have two healthy tomato plants out of the 6 I planted. My squash is very happy and my garlic is perfect. After last year being so terrible, I kept it small this year and things are going well in spite of the weather and jumping worms.
Yep..here too..some crops were really stunted from the heat and although trying to bounce back..those triple digits did some damage..tomatoes..squash..zukes, garlic, and herbs are still hanging in there. I too am already starting early seed planting for Fall.
