You know Cayu— I don’t think that one has to wait for roots to appear in order to plant them. Each year, I plant my onion bulbs in the ground, there is no green and no roots…and they just develop roots and send up leaves.
That is helpful My wee roots on each wee sproink are about a cm long. I'll dig out some pots and bring in some dirt tomorrow.
Sjoerd is quite right of course, and whether you plant outside in the ground or in suitable trays/pots indoors, the roots will grow when they are in contact with the soil/compost. As a matter of fact, I would say that the roots might well be stronger that way than rooting in water and then transplanting, as there is less trauma for the delicate new roots.
Thank you Tetters. I'm pretty excited to start this project. Spring in winter. 5 months until I can put anything in the ground outside. Could have skipped a step it seems. Glad I didn't wait too long.
Thanks all. I have one sprouted onion that I'll separate, like demonstrated in the video, then plant in pot. I imagine i should water only very sparingly until the roots grow. Just like with amaryllis bulbs, etc This'll be great fun to have on my kitchen window sill. Brings me back to my college years when I'd plant anything in a pot. Anything.
Cayu, once you have planted it, I wouldn’t continue giving it water too regularly. How often do you water your onions out in your plot? Onions are very susceptible to “white rot”, you know. I had to laugh when I read about you planting things when you were a youngster. Ha ha— I did the exact same thing. The window sill and dresser in my room had tin cans and used glass jars with germinating seeds and seedlings in them. Ahh the memories.
Well the little green onion garden is doing well. When I purchased Green Onions from the grocery in October,I trimmed them to the whites, and then put them in water. It is changed frequently with the tiniest pinch of 20-20-20. The smallest one has been harvested about five times, the second largest is on it's third harvest. The margarine containers have no soil, just water. The sprouted onion is in the pot, after sitting in water for a week to encourage the roots to start. It is doing well. Fingers crossed I will have green onions until onion seed sprouts become harvestable when trimmed.
One of ours is starting to spring And we got some sets ready to go in. Will get them going in trays first to produce root growth. Gives them a head start.
