White paper birch has a fungus inside. Probably why it was cut down. I like the idea of the mushroom like top.on the stump. Looks like someone has an extensive imagination. Most shrooms grow on three showing weeping and a perfect growing medium for rooms/fungus.

Daniel very nice blooms next to you charming pup…

Ooo that sucker will take over any garden in no time..Never seen ivy with fruits/seed. Yikes here ivy crawls up the trees in the forests and smothers the trees. It is now for nurseries illegal to sell ivy . I totally get it..ivy grows fast and covers anything in its tracks, birds spread its seeds. Like wild blackberry, some native clematis and Virginia creeper. Also kudzu.. ? I can grow kudzu no problem. Of course depending on one’s climate.

I concur Sjoerd. Birch don't have a really long life and rot from the inside out. I'd be very worried about that tree as well @Gail-Steman . We just took three big Birch beside the house this summer for similiar reasons. It was a sad day because we will certainly miss thier shade and the sound of their leaves. Sure enough, once we dropped them, there was evidence of a dark ring in the middle. Can you have the tree assessed?

Thanks about the ivy @Pacnorwest and @Melody Mc. here it matures and then it flowers then fruit. In the spinny it grows up in the trees, but it doesn't get managed very well. It's left to just do what it wants, sometimes making the tree top heavy and then the tree falls over with the weight.

The catkins are a nice winter attraction during the freezing winters. Our Hazel tree produces hazel nuts too. The tree drives me Nuts-pardon the pun… because it sends up suckers like crazy. And of course the squirrels are busy packing away all the nuts for winter . And by spring… there are hundreds of hazel nuts sprouting everywhere…
Every year I swear I’m gonna cut that tree down, but it is so amusing to watch the fat grey squirrels pack the nuts in their cheeks as their bodies contort their way to the farthest ends of branches curving down so far they almost touch the ground. Then with fancy chirping and chubby cheeks hanging from the branch like Tarzan jump off the limb to another to start the process all over. The whole tree seems to be shivering from this process while these squirrels take their winter stash for safe keeping.
