Spring is coming, but it has had a few tantrums while being dragged through the door by the higher sun. We have had a huge influx of birds that are waiting for the world to warm up. The last two mornings we have woken to 3-4 inches of wet snow, which ended once the world warmed up and melted quickly. The lakes and marshes are still frozen with the exception of the large lake close to our home ( it is too deep and rarely freezes over). The resulting medly of birds includes a few feeding times and stations. There are about 20 Red Winged Blackbirds that are enjoying the flooded beaver field while their marsh thaws. They bugle themselves into the first seating of the four feeders around 6 am. ( We ensure the feeders are full at night time). By about 6:30 or 7:00 AM the Grosbeaks are in the treetops waiting in line. Angus and I spread seed on two of the deck railings for them. Within minutes they come down to have breakfast. The most we have counted on the railing at one time is 19. The house finches and pine siskens fit in and are primarily the clean up crew during the day. By 5 pm it is time for the second sitting, and the routine is repeated. They will be very glad to have spring decide to stay. Hopefully next week
This is such a good posting, Mel. I am alarmed to see how much snow you still have. Well it is nice for you to help those birdies out. Well, it is also entertainment for you. Any friend of Nature is a friend of mine. Chapeau.
The snow is certainly hanging on here. The nearest town that is our service area hasn't had snow in a couple of weeks now. Everything is waiting patiently. Or maybe not so much.
