The Good Day All Thread

All the rest of the perennials and veggies are hardened off. Hopefully the weather holds out this weekend so I can can them all in the ground. No garden work tonite got a father/daughter dance at the school.

 

Fingers crossed for you this week end, mate.

 

I had a happy hour in the garden, weeding the Roma tomatoes and giving the weeds to the hens. "Oh boy, greenies!" There is still quite a bit of weeding to be done, but my back was hurting and I needed to take the big pot of basil out of the barn and into its ceramic pot in the herb bed. The tomatoes are looking quite well, and we have two cherry tomatoes (count them, two!) ripe and ready to pick. Guess what will top our lettuce salads tonight.

The smoke has lifted a wee bit today so lots was done early. It is inside time for a coffee now. It will be a little cooler today at 29 with a chance of rain and thunderstorms. The rain would be lovely.

Then...the dirty job of all dirty jobs....Hubby's outhouse caved in with all of the rain and snow melt. He is very attached to his outhouse and the view it offers of the snow capped mountains. Right now he has a plank going over the cave-in to enter - that just won't do ( shudder). Today will be lifting it with the tractor, putting in bracing and some treated plywood, then back filling and repositioning. I am the flunky/gopher in this job so that he does not have to get up and down off of the tractor.....I think I deserve a raise.

He's pretty "bummed" ( giggle) as this was a new hole dug with a neighbour's backhoe last year, and was looking to be the last one. The repairs will give us a year , then a new hole and respositioning. As long as he keeps the view he doesn't mind.

The toilet planter will have to be put on hold until the new hole is dug next year. I won't want to move a porcelain toilet full of dirt...ever.

 

Melody most of my garden gloves the finger tips are worn out . Wearing two pair was actually an accident until I realized how easy it was to pull spikey weeds . Blackberry roots are deep tap roots and some are inner twined in the crown of plants so I can’t always spray them or everything underground where the roots touch other plants except the huge trees will also be effected. I swear weeds drive me bonkers… at least I have an excuse for my wacky personality… I have a lot of other weeds that blow in with he winter currents. Some are an easy pull-shallow roots. Today will mow more grass hay in the pastures trim some shrubs that have out grown their space. Pull blackberry weeds….Then rinse and repeat thruout the whole garden.
Glad to hear the smoke has lifted. Last year during the new season call Fire Season
I had to block all the vents in the ceilings around doors . Smoke can easily point out all the leaks in the home. Blocking the vents stopped the smoke from entering the house. Outside the plants in some areas from the winds were cornered in fine ash.
You would think that our governments would clear more fire breaks in dense forested areas . Rather than risk the destruction these wild fires cause. I would rather pay higher taxes for the funds to clear areas than risk it all.
Melody are you in a wildfire zone. The state put us in a wildfire zone and our fire insurance has tripled. More rain storms predicted today with 35 lightening strikes and it’s not even noon.

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 13°C and pouring rain. We needed some rain badly, and I couldn't be happier!
A few close calls for my seedlings this week with the cold weather, but my little propane heater saved the plants in the greenhouse. I think from here on out the temperatures are higher and it should be safe. Hoping to get some of my cool weather crops planted this weekend.
My eye is feeling much better today. I took a stick to the eye on Wednesday and it took a few days before I could take off the dark glasses.
Looks like today is housework day, until the rain stops at least haha

Netty, so happy to hear your eye is feeling better. Would it be possible for you to wear safety glasses while working outside?
I just got in from finishing weeding the Roma bed. Sure feels good to have dirt under my fingernails! Darn, those tomato plants look good, and have loads of blossoms. They need tying to the trellis again, but that's for another day.
Hope your day blossoms, too!

 

Jane— I know what you mean about dirt under the nails. You sort of feel like you are gardening again for real.
Toms full un bloom must be a wonderful sight, and feeling.

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 10°C and sunny. There is a bit of a breeze that makes it feel cooler.
I spent part of the day in my greenhouse, sowing seeds and fertilizing seedlings, as well as moving compost to my raised beds. Just 2 more beds to top up and I am good to go!
I got a small tiller that fits on my Stihl combi system, so I'm going to use that to mix in the compost before planting. So excited to finally get the veggie garden growing again!
Today, I will finish the laundry and clean the bathroom before I am allowing myself to go outside.

Good Monday morning all. Currently 8°C and sunny.
I had a great day in the garden yesterday. Spent all morning topping up my raised beds with mushroom compost and mixing it in with my mini tiller attachment. I sowed some seeds and planted some onions. My faithful dog, Sargent, happily hanging out with me in the garden enclosure. The garden isn't just my happy place, it is Sargents happy place too. While I was planting onions, he was dropping his ball in front of me and I was throwing it for him. All of a sudden, I heard a squealing and looked up to see a litter of baby bunnies scattering in one of the raised beds, and Sargent with one! OH NO!!! I told him to leave it and tried to round up the bunnies, I think there was 8 of them, when all of a sudden I saw the mother rabbit running along the outside of the fence. For those of you who know the german shepherd breed, they have a high prey drive and if it moves, they will chase it. It was complete CHAOS for a few minutes! DD came outside during the ruckus and took the dog inside so I could finish planting my onions, water and close up the greenhouse. Since the mother rabbit saw what happened I figured she would move her babies during the night but she did not. So here I am, in the middle of planting season, with a bunch of rabbit babies on the wrong side of the garden fence. I am afraid to plant anything else, with fears it will all get eaten, and that the bunnies will make my garden their happy place too. With everything in me, I want to gather those babies up and move them to another spot in the yard - I know where the mother rabbit hangs out during the day - but as much as I dislike rabbits I don't want anything bad to happen to them [which is what will happen if they remain in my and dogs happy place]. Anyone know at what age baby bunnies can fend for themselves? Oh, and the baby the dog caught was not harmed. What a disaster - they are in the raised bed where I want to plant my beans. UGH, guess I'm going to go research the life of a rabbit!

Holy-moley, Netty—what a drama!
I hope you can find a solution that you can live with. As you well know, they may be cute, but they can ruin veggie and flower beds. Do you have a Havaheart trap by any chance? If you could catch the mother then remove the little ones from their nest depression, they could all be relocated together.
