What have you done today in the Garden?

Just get stuck in. It sounds like fun to me.
Those sorts of days make my heart sing.

 

Watered the polyanthus around the path, a border that i did a few days ago, all of the blueberries and the tomato plants.

 

That sounds good to me. Now I want to see the results.

 

Started renovating the drip irrigation. First thing, do the main lines work? It took a while, but yes they do. The new lines I installed for some row crops don't work. Back to the drawing board. It will need a week of effort. One raised bed at a time. The pressure regulator is gone. Who took that? (Not me. Mystery...). Off the the supplies store.

 

This sounds curious, Daniel.
Hopefully the system will work once that has been replaced.

 

All of the emitters need replacing. My well water sends sediment through the system and clogs it. The filter helps but not the dissolved minerals. Plus the really good fittings cost way too much, so I use cheaper ones that take more effort to install. But I can do it. I did last year.

Today I mostly watered. I over the cold now, but Im slow.

 

Sjoerd your explanation of Riley’s garden is well said and you mentioned all the elements which are the flow of plants, colors , large and small in great detail and all in proportion to the yard size. Hard scapes and the excellent caretaking and planning that exudes perfection…. Is exactly what a judge would say… this description is brilliant and why you would be a great judge.

Doghouse Riley Adore your well designed and beautiful paradise . Many don’t realize how much energy goes into a garden as well designed as your garden and obvious diligent continuous care. Soon the roses will be the star of your garden. A well planned and executed four seasons garden . Soon a round of golf will be on your list…

 

Daniel we use a filter system to keep the soaker and emitters from clogging.even the house water system is on a different line from the well we still need to protect our hoses and appliances etc. or just a small hose screen on the outtake valve connection to the hose helps. I have to admit I only use the admiters for potted plants. They can clog easy.

 

Daniel— well I may never have such a system, but I do find it interesting to read your accounts, not only of how it woks, but also the odd problem that may crop-up.

Hey, thanks Pac. What a nice thing to say. Well, you know— there really isn’t anything bad to say about Riley’s achievements. Sort of like Daniel’s efforts. He is also a stand-out gardener and totally different from Riley. It’s the diversity on this website; the diversity and interesting personalities with their gardening experiences.

 

I've got the jobs done early today as this afternoon, I'll be flitting between football, rugby, cricket and road cycling on TV this afternoon.
More clematis tying up, wisteria pruning and the constant chore of vaccing up wisteria blooms and feeding the lawn.

I'm pleased with two plants that could have suffered in that very cold February

This acer palmatum Tayor is now in full leaf, I may balance out the foliage in the autumn.





When you consider you start the year with wisterias with bare branches, followed by just blooms, as they fade they are followed by a lot of foliage.
I'll prune off these blooms in a week or two, it'll save having to vacuum them up.




The roses are coming out now. These in the "alley of shame." The side of our drive which gets little sun, it's where the ones my wife doesn't like, end up.










There's a few out of the 12 on the "rose patio."



















The heathers have done well, they don't look unattractive now the blooms have gone, so they can stay where they are.





No rain forecast for a week, so I gave everything a good watering, particularly the big acer in the front garden.

 

I had the joy of touring the Pacific Bonsai Museum and adjacent species garden. Could have spent so much more time there and will definitely have to go back. Finished roughing in my last hillside path and raised bed. The bones are set, now for the tidying and maintenance.

 

Weeded, watered, trimmed and tied up tomatoes, trellised the cukes. My green beans seed package said no trellis bush type but I am gonna trellis them anyway since some flopped. Wish I had thought to make wider rows just in case but had to be a good boy and follow instructions.

 

Planted up the hanging baskets with a fuchsia, trailing geraniums and some mexican fleabane.

 

Planted my sweet passion, model and honeydew melon starts. My local garden center had 20% off all plants [they are already cheaper than the box stores]. So got some geranium and impatient. Also grab some herbs - spearmint, oregano and cilantro. Tomorrow plan on planting peppers and watermelon in the AM.
