Fellow Gardeners, I suppose that you remember a number of days ago there was this apocalyptic wind storm here. I posted a couple of pics. Well, at the end of the street, near the old Eastern Gate to the city; on the bank of the old city moat, an old tree was blown over and the top of the tree next to it was broken off by the ruthless wind. There were trees down all over the city and he crews work on clearing the damage every day. On the way home, we stopped to take a look. The first image shows the broken off tree in the water and the trunk. The force must have been tremendous. There was a crane lifting limbs and trunk pieces up from the side of the dike and working with them to make them ready to take away. The work drew a small crowd— ramptouristen (disaster tourists). This day I was one as well. Here are the lads working with that large limb: Going back to the bridge to take another foto, you can see the tree trunk has been removed as well as some debris; however, there is still so many limbs and leaves you still cannot see much water : I wonder how many more days until it is all tidied.
They've certainly got their work cut out for them haven't they? I just hope everything goes smoothly and the dyke will soon be clear once again.
Never a happy sight to see beautiful trees like that destroyed... I hope new saplings of the same type of trees get planted there next season, to restore the balance.
The power of wind always amazes me, and frightens me a bit. That tree has endured many storms over its years - it must have been quite the wind Sjoerd.
